Earn Your Washington Social Work License

Are you interested in getting your social work license in Washington? By getting your social work license in Washington, you’ll be joining approximately 4,450 other social workers in providing the residents of Washington with quality mental health services. Below you’ll find a step-by-step guide for obtaining your Washington social work license. 5 Steps for Obtaining Your Washington Social Work License:

    Fulfill Your Education Requirement.

    Obtain a Master of Social Work (MSW) from a CSWE approved or accredited college or university.

    Qualify for the Clinical Exam.

    Complete the State Application to become a registered as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker Associate.

    Complete 4,000 hours of experience of which 1,000 hours must be direct client contact over a three-year period supervised by an LICSW.

    Obtain at least 130 hours of supervision by a licensed mental health practitioner. Of the total supervision, 70 hours must be with an LICSW; the other 60 hours may be with an equally qualified licensed mental health practitioner. 60 hours must be one-to-one supervision and 70 hours may be one-to-one supervision or group supervision. Distance supervision is limited to 60 supervision hours.

    Complete a minimum of four hours of AIDS awareness education.

    Apply for the Clinical Exam.

    Complete the State Application to become a LICSW.

    Make sure to review your completed application. Missing dates and signatures are the most common reasons applications are delayed. And don’t forget to include the check!

    You'll have to pass the ASWB LCSW exam to get your Washington Social Work License. So once you are cleared, register for the LCSW exam with the ASWB.

    Prepare for the Social Work Clinical License (LCSW) Exam and obtain your LICSW.

    Pick an exam date and make your test appointment at Pearson VUE.
