We are with you until you pass the LMFT exam!

The BBS provides accommodations for the California Clinical MFT Exam. If you have a physical or mental health disability you may request accommodations such as additional time, a private room, or a written version of the exam. The BBS will determine which accommodations you qualify for based on the information provided in your request for testing accommodations application. The BBS also provides additional time (time and a half, 6 hours) for the MFT Clinical Exam for English as a Second Language (ESL) applicants who meet the requirements enumerated on the ESL accommodations application.

    1. Celebrate this awesome achievement!
    2. Submit application for your initial license.
    3. Continue receiving supervision until your license is issued.

The MFT Clinical Exam covers a broad range of subjects including treatment, treatment planning, law and ethics, clinical evaluation, and crisis management. Not only do you need to know the subject matters, the BBS wants to ensure you know how to apply this knowledge in different clinical situations. The majority of questions on the MFT Clinical Exam are considered reasoning-based questions. Therapist Development Center’s program provides a streamlined approach, teaching you the all of the information you need to learn and how to apply this knowledge to the questions that are likely to appear on the exam.

The application processing time for the California Clinical MFT Exam can vary based on volume of applications and staffing levels at the BBS. In recent months, the BBS has kept processing time for the MFT California Clinical Exam down to 1-2 months. If you are applying for accommodations (see below), processing times can vary and it is important to begin this process as soon as you submit your application for the MFT Clinical Exam.

The BBS publishes the pass rates for all licensing exams in their quarterly Board Meeting materials. The most recent data available shows the pass rate for first time test takers of the California Clinical MFT Exam in the first half of 2018 was over 70%. Since the new MFT Clinical Exam was launched in 2016, Therapist Development Center pass rate has remained above 90% for individuals who used our comprehensive program!

The BBS no longer publishes the passing score for any of their exams, including the MFT Clinical Exam. However, based on the published scores that were shared in prior years, the passing score was typically in the range of 97-103 out of 150 scored questions (mid-60%). The passing score will fluctuate up or down based on the level of difficulty; the passing score will be lower if the exam is considered harder and higher if it is considered easier. In addition to the 150 scored questions, the MFT Clinical Exam will always include 20 questions that are considered experimental and will not count toward your final score.

The MFT Clinical Exam is a standardized 170 question multiple-choice question test. 150 of the test questions are scored, and 20 are experimental and do not count toward your final score. Test takers are granted 4 hours to complete the exam questions. Accommodations for additional time can be requested through the BBS for English as a Second Language (ESL) test takers and those with physical or mental health issues who qualify through the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The MFT Clinical Exam is the final step on the path to licensure. The following requirements must be satisfied to be eligible to sit for the California MFT Clinical Exam:

    • Obtain qualifying master’s degree and complete additional coursework
    • Completion of  3,000 hours of experience over the course of 104 weeks or more
    • Take and pass the CA Law and Ethics Exam (once you pass, you do not need to take the exam again)
    • Submit application for licensure and examination to the BBS:
    • You must take the exam within one year from the date you receive initial approval. If you do not complete the exam in this timeframe, your application will be considered abandoned. If an application is abandoned, you would need to re-apply and would lose any hours of experience that are more than six (6) years old (with exception of 500 hours accrued as trainee)

    Course Reviews

I studied for a month and a half using TDC. I felt prepared for the exam and the material was easy to follow. The presenter was very engaging and the stores she told helped me remember the concepts. Passed the test my first time taking it!

I have to credit most of my passing to utilizing not only the study material provided by TDC but also the strategies! There were a few times during the test where my anxiety started to get the best of me or I was confused on what the question was asking. I reminded myself what Asya, Robin and Amanda have shared about how to push yourself forward. Taking a few moments to regroup and utilize the strategies they offered, really helped push me through the exam and ultimately pass! Thank you TDC, Asya, Robin and Amanda!!

Thank you so much TDC!! My study timeline was a whirlwind with COVID and back surgery complications, but TDC fully prepared me to pass the exam even with my limited timeline. I actually felt like the real exam was much easier than the clinical mocks with TDC, so I was well prepared. Thank you for everything!!

I felt guided throughout the whole process with TDC. The topics and Amanda's detailed explanations fully prepared me for the LMFT exam. TDC is helping to change lives. If you want to pass the exam and thrive in your field to serve others in the best way possible, study with TDC.
    With Gratitude,

I would highly recommend this program to anyone on the road to licensure. I recently passed my LMCE exam. I accomplished this by studying almost daily for an hour (or more), using the practice exams as teachers to understand the concepts/material, and as tools to identify my weaknesses and focusing on studying those weaker areas.

Thank you TDC! This program really prepped me for this exam. I would say it is very similar to the mock quizzes! If you do poorly on the final mock exams, don't let yourself spiral! It's OK! The quizzes are much more in line with the test. The vignettes are generally a bit shorter on the actual exam as well. I finished with about 12 minutes to spare. Enough time to check my flagged answers. For context, I'm not sure I was able to finish my TDC quizzes with that much time to spare. I had time to take multiple restroom breaks (nervous bladder) plus my snack break. Once I got into the groove of the test, I felt like I was passing pretty much the whole way through. Thanks TDC!

I would not have passed without TDC! The structure, organization along with the breadth and depth of subject matter was spot on! I took a year off after graduation and the full 6 yrs to complete my hours. The first year, I was in a private practice setting and did not gain much experience. So, I left to join an agency, but then moved with about 800 hrs. left and started again in private practice. However, it was difficult for me to finish the 2nd half of my child/conjoint hours, especially after COVID hit. I was extremely rusty on DSM, and did spend quite a bit of extra time creating my own spreadsheet, which I called "Nicole's Differential Diagnosis Table." The diagnosis questions became the easiest of all for me. It would have been a huge personal/professional blow to have failed. So, when I got my results, I cried!! I am so happy that I passed and extremely grateful for TDC! I couldn't have done it without you. Thank you so much! Nicole

This was an incredibly rigorous, yet accessible program. I feel like I was more than prepared for the exam and I would highly recommend TDC for other MFTs in training.

FABULOUS study system. I was actually over-prepared and felt confident throughout the actual exam, thanks to this program!! Worth every penny!!

Thank you for your support with both the materials and being available for coaching and prep talks. I was slightly discouraged after not initially passing but felt more confident after talking with a coach . Learned a lot on the way with this journey and one lesson that sticks out is to trust the process. Glad I did, helped me to pass , finally ! =)

This course is really exceptional. I am the mother of two small kids, 3 months and 2.5 years, and still found time to listed to the lectures and look over the study materials. I felt confident and excited to go into my test and felt like I was rocking it the whole time! TDC more then prepared me and I am so thrilled I passed!!!

Special thanks to Asya for responding to my email right before the holiday break. Just in the nick of time. You're awesome! Thanks TDC for helping me study for the exam. I passed on my first try. I would not know how to study without TDC. The Sample Study Plan helped me stay on track and I love the audio features. Getting here has not been easy. First BBS lost my info due to the switch from PSI to Pearson. Next, test sites were closed due to COVID-19. I appreciate that it is so easy to request for an extension. Great customer service! I definitely recommend TDC.

Amanda you were my best friend throughout this journey! Thank you TDC, first time passed the test! I would highly recommend you take this course and rely on your experience, whether it was positive or negative. You can build on both with this study course. Thank you thank you!

After passing the test, I can say that I felt completely prepared (almost over-prepared) after completing the TDC study program. I think TDC does an excellent job for preparing you not just with the material in the actual test questions, but for the emotions and exhaustion of the actual test day.

Thank you so much for your help! I definitely took you in the room with me and used the strategies throughout the test. I made sure to take a bite of my snack and drink before going in and I'm glad I did because I didn't have enough time to take a break. You are awesome and I'm so glad I chose this study package versus ones that have you read and study on your own.

I used TDC for my MFT Law and Ethics exam and passed and I decided to use TDC for my MFT clinical licensure studying. I am a visual learner, so I was initially nervous with TDC because it is so heavily based in audio. However, I found that the audio in combination with the written materials and the practice exams worked perfectly for me. I actually found that I preferred the audio aspects of the studying. The practice questions are in the same style as the exam which helped me to feel less overwhelmed during the actual test. I only connected with the coaches once towards the last couple exams that they responded within the listed time frame and were very helpful and reassuring.

I felt that the TDC materials more than prepared me for the licensing exam.

I can't say thank you enough. I am so full.

Thank you for coming in to the room to take the test with me. I kept thinking how you would answer the question and that brought a sense of peace.

I had originally spent way to much money on another study system which required a ton of memorizing and gave no help at all on how to actually study for, prepare for, and actually take the test. I felt doomed. I had been out of practice for nearly 4 years and my original Registration number was going to expire in a few short months, so it was now or never. I had already renewed it the most times allowed. I submitted my paperwork in July 2020, and my new supervisor suggested Therapist Development Center to me. I still felt my time was running low and starting back in practice after a four year break meant I had a lot of information to brush up on. TDC was so easy because they helped me lay out my exact plan and when I would study. I would listen to the post casts in my car and as I fell asleep every night. The information was sinking in. When I got to the First of the final mock exams I scored a 58. I was mortified! I had previously been scoring in the 70's and 80's. I reached out to the online coach and she got back to me right away. She assured me the final two mocks were very difficult. I made sure I had enough time to do the second mock and go through all of the rationales prior to my big day. The computers were down when I arrived for my test time and I didn't start till an hour after my appointment. They had given us a dry erase board to use during our test so I used that time to write down all the tips I had remembered Amanda telling us regarding taking this test. There were also some Dx criteria I wrote down that I know would be hard to remember if I was under stress. I wrote as much down as I felt I needed to and then I was ready to start. I followed all of Amanda's guidance on food, and taking a break etc. I finished with 5 minutes left even after taking my break and having some food (the clock is still running even though I stopped to eat), and I'm glad I did because I was recharged and ready to go. The final 15 questions were so hard because I was realizing I was almost DONE! My anxiety was high at this time. I just kept breathing and staying calm, and reading each stem word by word. Relieved was an understatement when the proctor handed me that piece of paper that said "Congratulations." I sat in my car and just cried for a few minutes, tears of joy, and happiness and relief. I know I never could have passed if it were not for these study materials. Thanks to this entire team for creating such an amazing course to help us achieve our goals of licensure! Also, I was able to go onto Breeze and input my info and upgrade my license and it was done instantly after paying with a credit card. I was licensed that very same moment!
