We are with you until you pass the LMFT exam!

The BBS provides accommodations for the California Clinical MFT Exam. If you have a physical or mental health disability you may request accommodations such as additional time, a private room, or a written version of the exam. The BBS will determine which accommodations you qualify for based on the information provided in your request for testing accommodations application. The BBS also provides additional time (time and a half, 6 hours) for the MFT Clinical Exam for English as a Second Language (ESL) applicants who meet the requirements enumerated on the ESL accommodations application.

    1. Celebrate this awesome achievement!
    2. Submit application for your initial license.
    3. Continue receiving supervision until your license is issued.

The MFT Clinical Exam covers a broad range of subjects including treatment, treatment planning, law and ethics, clinical evaluation, and crisis management. Not only do you need to know the subject matters, the BBS wants to ensure you know how to apply this knowledge in different clinical situations. The majority of questions on the MFT Clinical Exam are considered reasoning-based questions. Therapist Development Center’s program provides a streamlined approach, teaching you the all of the information you need to learn and how to apply this knowledge to the questions that are likely to appear on the exam.

The application processing time for the California Clinical MFT Exam can vary based on volume of applications and staffing levels at the BBS. In recent months, the BBS has kept processing time for the MFT California Clinical Exam down to 1-2 months. If you are applying for accommodations (see below), processing times can vary and it is important to begin this process as soon as you submit your application for the MFT Clinical Exam.

The BBS publishes the pass rates for all licensing exams in their quarterly Board Meeting materials. The most recent data available shows the pass rate for first time test takers of the California Clinical MFT Exam in the first half of 2018 was over 70%. Since the new MFT Clinical Exam was launched in 2016, Therapist Development Center pass rate has remained above 90% for individuals who used our comprehensive program!

The BBS no longer publishes the passing score for any of their exams, including the MFT Clinical Exam. However, based on the published scores that were shared in prior years, the passing score was typically in the range of 97-103 out of 150 scored questions (mid-60%). The passing score will fluctuate up or down based on the level of difficulty; the passing score will be lower if the exam is considered harder and higher if it is considered easier. In addition to the 150 scored questions, the MFT Clinical Exam will always include 20 questions that are considered experimental and will not count toward your final score.

The MFT Clinical Exam is a standardized 170 question multiple-choice question test. 150 of the test questions are scored, and 20 are experimental and do not count toward your final score. Test takers are granted 4 hours to complete the exam questions. Accommodations for additional time can be requested through the BBS for English as a Second Language (ESL) test takers and those with physical or mental health issues who qualify through the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The MFT Clinical Exam is the final step on the path to licensure. The following requirements must be satisfied to be eligible to sit for the California MFT Clinical Exam:

    • Obtain qualifying master’s degree and complete additional coursework
    • Completion of  3,000 hours of experience over the course of 104 weeks or more
    • Take and pass the CA Law and Ethics Exam (once you pass, you do not need to take the exam again)
    • Submit application for licensure and examination to the BBS:
    • You must take the exam within one year from the date you receive initial approval. If you do not complete the exam in this timeframe, your application will be considered abandoned. If an application is abandoned, you would need to re-apply and would lose any hours of experience that are more than six (6) years old (with exception of 500 hours accrued as trainee)

    Course Reviews

TDC not only solidified my knowledge base, it taught me how to think for the test. By the end of preparing, I was dreaming about multiple choice exams and applying strategies Amanda reviews to knock out wrong answers. I was thinking in test strategy terms the days prior to the test! It felt like being immersed in the test world and becoming fluent. I felt more than adequately prepared for the test by TDC. Even more valuable, I felt like I became a better clinician with the comprehensive review and enhanced critical thinking skills! When I approached the program knowing I could get more out of it than trying to just pass, I really got into the studying and enjoyed the material.

I took the MFT Clinical Exam on April 1, 2022. Passed with ease, with about 15 minutes to spare, even though I took a 5 minute bio, juice, fruit break after I finished question 90. I was running ahead of schedule, per the time guidelines I wrote on my white board.

The actual examination was a joy to engage with. I felt well prepared by TDC and believe that all the mock examinations (3 mocks + 2 final mocks) which were very helpful, were by *far* tougher that the real exam. All other materials were on point and helped meaningfully prepare me for this examination. My special thanks, as always, to Robin Gluck, for her calm voice of reason and encouragement. You rock, Robin!

I truly believe that engaging with all the preparation materials in a systematic and organized way, in addition to having good clinical experiences (client work [1:1 and group therapy], clinical case consultation, and excellent supervision) makes the difference. This exam was nothing more than a capstone for all the clinical experiences many of you have already had. You can and will slay this beast - and you will do so joyfully, as I did.

Approach the exam as an excellent clinician would work with a client. Having a curious, joyful, and positive mindset will help you cruise to victory.

Good wishes to you all as you write your own narrative for Clinical Exam success - and beyond!

The study materials definitely over prepare you for the exam but all relevant to what a good clinician should know! This allowed me to "attack" the exam and felt at ease and well prepared to answer even the most difficult questions. Thanks TDC!!

Super helpful!!! The practice tests were much harder than the actual test. Very similar questions some were almost exact.

I used TDC for my Law and Ethics exam and for the California Clinical LMF exam and passed! This program is absolutely excellent.

I’m happy to have passed this exam. It took me a few tries but finally I did it. Thank you!

I recommended this course to a few of my friends and it was referred to me by a few people including my own therapist. I especially liked that it would explain how to approach each question in the exam. Also that there were so many practice exams. Reviewing the practice exams was most helpful. It really worked well for me and my learning style.

I made the mistake of initially purchasing the Gerry Grossman study materials. I had a bad feeling as soon as I started taking those practice questions--they contradicted each other, seemed designed to trick, and the sheer multitude of information without any kind of overarching organizing principle was absolutely overwhelming. I made the gut decision to switch to TDC with only a couple months remaining before my test and was instantly relieved. The framing of the program just felt comforting and as if there was someone looking out for me. As many others have mentioned, it focused on strategy, honing in on relevant information (rather than throwing a slew of meaningless memorization tools at me). When I sat down to take the actual exam, I was thrilled to find that the questions felt familiar and I knew how to attack them. In addition, I was blown away by the in-depth support from the Ask-a-Coach feature. I've already recommended this program to several colleagues, and credit TDC for passing my exam! Thank you so much for your expertly designed program!!

This study prep was very comprehensive and totally helped me boost my self esteem before sitting for the exam. While the actual exam was challenging (mostly due to the convoluted way the questions were asked) this test prep really covered everything asked.

I used tdc and it was soo helpful. Super user friendly . I felt all the information taught in tdc was on point with the real exam. The mock exam vignettes are very similar to what you can expect in the real exam. I’m am extremely happy I used tdc study material. I did what Amanda suggested in preparing for the exam. Also learning to tolerate that feeling of uncertainty to help keep you focused during the exam. Good luck to everyone!

I passed my exam, after not passing it the first time. I did not follow the program thoroughly, which was a HUGE mistake on my part, the first time around. I came back to this program (after failing) because I noticed the questions on the actual exam are similar to the questions asked in the mock exams, in this program. The mock exams and TDC program (as a whole) prepare you very, very well for the Licensed Clinical MFT Exam. THANK YOU to the coaches of TDC program, for being there throughout the whole journey.

I had so much anxiety going into studying for this test. I had heard from previous co-workers that TDC helped them pass, so I decided to give it a try. Best decision I made. I studied for my exam for a solid three months, and went through the program twice. The mock exams were super helpful and probably a bit more difficult than the actual exam. Thank you times a million for helping me pass my LMFT exam on my first attempt!! I feel so relieved.

I did! I passed my LMFT exam on my 1st attempted and its thanks to TDC. Thank you for helping me prepare for my exam.

TDC definately overprepares you in the best way possible! When taking the exam I felt so comfortable and even felt like I recognized some of the questions from the mock exams which was very reassuring and helped build confidence.

This TDC got me through both my ethics and license exam the first time. I loved the structure, the mixed modalities, and the thought process support.
    Thank you TDC!

I am so excited that I passed!!! I purchased the program with plans to take it step by step but due to LIFE I was unable to do so. I found myself having to utilize the coaching and really tailoring the program to a shorter time span. I don't recommend you do this but that is what I had to do. Due to time limit I went backwards and took the mock exam first to see where I was needing to focus, this gave me a better idea of how I could use my time. I studied items and listened to recordings. I really appreciated the PRE-Prep talk I TOTALLY recommend this. It helps bring you back and ground you. The tips from this helped me through the rough patches in the test and I PASSED!! So totally recommend this! Appreciate my coach Robin! She was great providing support and tips!

I really loved the program and enjoyed listening to the Audio on the theories. It would also, give me ideas to work with the families and interventions to use at times, and I feel even if you are license or not it is good to hear the theories once in a while. I really liked the Mock exams and found them really helpful when taking the test. Furthermore, some questions made me think about some of the laws and ethics I come a crossed and possible situations.

Thanks for your support! Thanks for extending my program. Amanda’s voice was very clear and peaceful! The study program was perfect!

I passed the exam on my first try! TDC is an excellent program to help you focus on areas that you need, and not waste time in areas that are not necessary. I also liked the lectures. The combination of audio, and practice exams, helped me to internalize the information. God covered me throughout the study process, through my test day, and finally my passing results. TDC, coupled with my faith, managed my anxiety and preparation for the exam. Thank you TDC!

The most difficult part of the exam for me was time management and accepting the uncertainty. It's so true that you don't feel like you're passing when you're taking it. I was literally having a visceral stress experience. I was sweating, heart beating out of my chest, eyes completely blood shot by the end. There were times when I felt like giving up. But Amanda's voice lives in my head rent-free and she said keep going; this is part of the experience. When the timer hit the halfway point, I was ten questions behind the halfway point in the exam. So the challenge became accepting that I'm not going to feel great about most of these and just getting to the end. I don't know if the second half felt easier or I just embraced the uncertainty, but I hit my stride and made it to the end with 90 seconds to spare. I took one break around #70.

I left the test room, picked up my results at the check in desk, waited until the elevator to look... PASS. I cried. I called my mom. It was a whole thing.

I think my biggest takeaway from the experience is that that after a certain point, it doesn't really matter how well versed you are in the clinical material itself; it's a matter of knowing how to think, embracing the uncertainty, and just making it to the end.
