Outside of California, MFT licensing is overseen by the Association of Marriage and Family Therapist Regulatory Board (AMFTRB), but the state of CA has its own governing board, the Bureau of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). After graduating from a masters degree program, one must register with the BBS as an Associate MFT and then take and pass the MFT Law & Ethics Exam. Once the L&E examination is passed, each candidate must accrue supervised work experience. California requires 3,000 hours over a minimum of 104 weeks in order to qualify for MFT Clinical licensure. When the hours have been completed, it’s time to take and pass the MFT Clinical Test with the BBS. And that’s it! By completing these steps, you can become an LMFT in the state of California. However, if you do decide to pursue this license, we highly recommend connecting with the Bureau of Behavioral Sciences directly as there may be additional details and steps you will need to know during this process. Here is the link to their website:

While the intent of both exams are designed to produce the same results, and that is to ensure public safety within the practice of therapy, there are some nuanced differences between the two MFT Clinical exams themselves.

  • Test Items: The CA MFT Clinical exam consisted of 170 test questions, with 20 of them no being counted towards scoring. Those unscored 20 are put on the exam as experimental questions to be considered as part of the scored items in future exams. On the National AMFTRB Clinical Exam there are 200 test questions, all of which are scored.
  • Content: The difference is slight, but the CA MFT Clinical focuses on testing your knowledge around treatment planning, clinical evaluation, treatment, crisis management, law and ethics, and treatment. The National AMFTRB Exam content focuses more on practice of systemic therapy (assessing, hypothesizing, and diagnosing), designing and conducting treatment (including the evaluation of the process and termination), managing crisis, and maintaining ethical, legal and professional standards.
  • Testing Windows: In California, the BBS offers the MFT Clinical Exam on an ongoing basis of five (5) times per week, while the the National MFT Exam is only offered one week per month, and you must sign up the first of the month during the month prior to you intended exam date.

Yes. In fact, questions pertaining to law and ethics make up more than ¼ of the CA MFT Clinical Exam! The BBS recognizes that a significant amount of time is likely to pass between the time applicants pass the law and ethics exam and when they are able to sit for the CA MFT Clinical exam. Therefore, they want to ensure applicants continue to stay up-to-date with relevant laws and ethical guidelines.

The first exam that associates are required to take is the MFT law and ethics exam. The exam’s name gives away the content--it solely tests your knowledge on the legal and ethical issues that guide our profession. The BBS requires you attempt this exam prior to renewing your associate registration. The clinical exam also tests your knowledge of law and ethics, but it also covers topics such as crisis management, treatment, treatment planning, and evaluation. Each of our programs are comprehensive and cover all of the content and strategy you will need to PASS both exams!

Course Reviews

Your practice tests are excellent preparation. My test was at least 60% on the very first stage of treatment: assessment, referrals and treatment planning. It also seemed to me that thinking clearly - as your prep test answer explanations teach/model so well - is the key to passing. Specific knowledge seemed way less important. There were very few questions that required knowledge of specific facts.

I passed!!! The TDC program was so helpful in teaching me how to think about what the question was asking, how to break it down & rule out wrong answers. I listened to the audio lectures daily to and from work. The information was concise & not overwhelmingly wordy. I felt very prepared & surprisingly had little anxiety prior to taking the test. The coaches were also very helpful in giving me extensions due to Covid issues. Thank you TDC team!!!

I started my journey to becoming an LMFT 3 months before my exam. I went over the TDC program twice and reviewed areas that I felt I needed more work on more than twice. That is the beauty of TDC that you are able to go at your own pace and review what you need. TDC was extremely easy to use from the quizzes, quick study guides, audios and Mocks. I really enjoyed reviewing the rationales for the mocks as that is key in learning and growing.

On the day of the Exam I went in knowing that I had done my best to prepare. I literally had the little voice in my head reading each question and saying "what is the question asking, is the answer related to the stem and is this the best answer" It was nice to know that after it was all said and done I had an hour left over which gave me more than enough time to review any flagged items.

TDC really did OVERPREPARE me for this exam which I am thankful for. I had used TDC for my Law & Ethics and knew I had to use it again for my clinical exam. I passed both exams on my first try. I could not be happier with my outcome and I am now ready to embark on my new journey!

This course well prepared me for the exam, the questions were so similar. After going through the material taking the mock exam and reviewing the questions i got wrong and the rationale, I felt more than prepared and confident during the exam

I passed by using this program, being consistent in studying, and having faith in the Lord that I could pass the Law and Ethics exam!

Thank you for such through study material, availability and flexibility through all of life's challenges, that ultimately helped me finally sit and pass my final exam.

I love TDC! I used their programs for the law and ethics and clinical exam and passed both on the first try.

I passed my California Clinical Exam the first time by utilizing the TDC program. The program helped me gain the knowledge I needed to pass the program, and I’m so thankful how it helped me not get overwhelmed through outlining how to set up a specific study schedule for me.

When i took the exam the first time, I had graduated from the counseling 20 years prior, completed 1 1-2 internships, and recently completed a PhD. program. Much had changed and I needed to catch up. TDC assisted me to fulfill this endeavor. Asya Mourraille was an amazing tutor. When she was working with me, I could throw out a topic and she would come back immediately to inform me of multiple items for me to know before going on to the next topic. I tried several prep courses. She not only informedme of the topic, but taught me HOW to take the test. All programs had something to offer, but TDC offered me the total package that I needed to pass the exam. And, I did it!!!!

The test is evil. TDC makes it passable. Thanks !

I am so excited that I pass my exam. I’m officially a LMFT! God is so good and the glory is all His! For those of you guys who have been studying for a while, and can’t pass that exam, don’t give up!! It took me many times to pass. After each failure, I would do some self-care. Then I would get back up and start studying again. Each time I studied my heart out. However, after each failure, I would learn something new about the test and about myself. TDC has been with me since day one! I’ve used other programs and nothing compared to TDC! Thank you TDC for all your support and patience with me!

I studied for 4 weeks just to make sure I knew everything. I passed easily. The questions on the test were like the practice questions for TDC. TDC is awesome!

This program really helped me! I had a few issues with having to reschedule my test and they helped extend my program as well. The material is very clear and really prepared me for the licensing exam. I would definitely recommend this program. I have used TDC law and ethics program as well and passed the first time around too!

I was worried when taking the mock exams because I wasn't scoring very well on them, but they definitely prepared me for the actual test. All of the quick studies and lectures were very helpful and easy to follow.

Highly recommend TDC's study prep! I felt totally prepared and passed the exam with ease (and 40 minutes early!) I tried one other study program before and TDC is far superior. Don't waste your time or money anywhere else. This program will give you exactly what you need to pass this test!

TDC not only solidified my knowledge base, it taught me how to think for the test. By the end of preparing, I was dreaming about multiple choice exams and applying strategies Amanda reviews to knock out wrong answers. I was thinking in test strategy terms the days prior to the test! It felt like being immersed in the test world and becoming fluent. I felt more than adequately prepared for the test by TDC. Even more valuable, I felt like I became a better clinician with the comprehensive review and enhanced critical thinking skills! When I approached the program knowing I could get more out of it than trying to just pass, I really got into the studying and enjoyed the material.

I took the MFT Clinical Exam on April 1, 2022. Passed with ease, with about 15 minutes to spare, even though I took a 5 minute bio, juice, fruit break after I finished question 90. I was running ahead of schedule, per the time guidelines I wrote on my white board.

The actual examination was a joy to engage with. I felt well prepared by TDC and believe that all the mock examinations (3 mocks + 2 final mocks) which were very helpful, were by *far* tougher that the real exam. All other materials were on point and helped meaningfully prepare me for this examination. My special thanks, as always, to Robin Gluck, for her calm voice of reason and encouragement. You rock, Robin!

I truly believe that engaging with all the preparation materials in a systematic and organized way, in addition to having good clinical experiences (client work [1:1 and group therapy], clinical case consultation, and excellent supervision) makes the difference. This exam was nothing more than a capstone for all the clinical experiences many of you have already had. You can and will slay this beast - and you will do so joyfully, as I did.

Approach the exam as an excellent clinician would work with a client. Having a curious, joyful, and positive mindset will help you cruise to victory.

Good wishes to you all as you write your own narrative for Clinical Exam success - and beyond!

The Therapist Development Center course for the CA Law and Ethics exam was spectacular. The design was intuitive and well organized. The material covered was spot-on relevant. I felt calm and (relatively) confident walking into the exam this morning, and I walked out with a PASS!

The first exam I failed was after waiting 18 months between studying and taking the exam. It was because the testing centers had been closed. I did some cursory re-studying, which was my big mistake. It no longer matters though...I took your course (just as recommended!) and passed. Thank you!

The study materials definitely over prepare you for the exam but all relevant to what a good clinician should know! This allowed me to "attack" the exam and felt at ease and well prepared to answer even the most difficult questions. Thanks TDC!!

Super helpful!!! The practice tests were much harder than the actual test. Very similar questions some were almost exact.
