Outside of California, MFT licensing is overseen by the Association of Marriage and Family Therapist Regulatory Board (AMFTRB), but the state of CA has its own governing board, the Bureau of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). After graduating from a masters degree program, one must register with the BBS as an Associate MFT and then take and pass the MFT Law & Ethics Exam. Once the L&E examination is passed, each candidate must accrue supervised work experience. California requires 3,000 hours over a minimum of 104 weeks in order to qualify for MFT Clinical licensure. When the hours have been completed, it’s time to take and pass the MFT Clinical Test with the BBS. And that’s it! By completing these steps, you can become an LMFT in the state of California. However, if you do decide to pursue this license, we highly recommend connecting with the Bureau of Behavioral Sciences directly as there may be additional details and steps you will need to know during this process. While the intent of both exams are designed to produce the same results, and that is to ensure public safety within the practice of therapy, there are some nuanced differences between the two MFT Clinical exams themselves.

  • Test Items: The CA MFT Clinical exam consisted of 170 test questions, with 20 of them no being counted towards scoring. Those unscored 20 are put on the exam as experimental questions to be considered as part of the scored items in future exams. On the National AMFTRB Clinical Exam there are 200 test questions, all of which are scored.
  • Content: The difference is slight, but the CA MFT Clinical focuses on testing your knowledge around treatment planning, clinical evaluation, treatment, crisis management, law and ethics, and treatment. The National AMFTRB Exam content focuses more on practice of systemic therapy (assessing, hypothesizing, and diagnosing), designing and conducting treatment (including the evaluation of the process and termination), managing crisis, and maintaining ethical, legal and professional standards.
  • Testing Windows: In California, the BBS offers the MFT Clinical Exam on an ongoing basis of five (5) times per week, while the the National MFT Exam is only offered one week per month, and you must sign up the first of the month during the month prior to you intended exam date.

Yes. In fact, questions pertaining to law and ethics make up more than ¼ of the CA MFT Clinical Exam! The BBS recognizes that a significant amount of time is likely to pass between the time applicants pass the law and ethics exam and when they are able to sit for the CA MFT Clinical exam. Therefore, they want to ensure applicants continue to stay up-to-date with relevant laws and ethical guidelines.

The first exam that associates are required to take is the MFT law and ethics exam. The exam’s name gives away the content--it solely tests your knowledge on the legal and ethical issues that guide our profession. The BBS requires you attempt this exam prior to renewing your associate registration. The clinical exam also tests your knowledge of law and ethics, but it also covers topics such as crisis management, treatment, treatment planning, and evaluation. Each of our programs are comprehensive and cover all of the content and strategy you will need to PASS both exams!

Course Reviews

Excellent course for both Law and Ethics and the LMFT Clinical Exam. I would recommend TDC to everyone who needs to not just pass the necessary exams for licensure, but it is also an excellent educational course to use throughout our careers in the helping profession.

The TDC program equips you with a lot of information so that you feel adequately prepared for the exam. The instructor is thorough, the handouts are informative, and the practice exams are challenging yet effective. I went through the program twice in which studied for 10 weeks and was able to pass my exam on the first attempt, thank God. I would definitely recommend this program!

Excellent Study Resource, TDC prepared me so well for this test. For someone who hates multiple choice, TDC made it so easy for me, Thank you!!!!!

When I took the first two exams and failed, I had not used the practice tests. When I took the exam the final time and passed, I had taken the first and third of the 2 1/2 hour practice tests, and in between those I listened to the rationales and reviewed the areas of study in which I recognized I was a weak. From this, I learned how to strengthen the necessary bodies of knowledge, and I also learned that when I became anxious about running out of time, I got several questions wrong in a row. I learned the level of speed at which I needed to read the questions stem, and to never let one extraneous thought enter my mind if possible, and to stay focused on the elements of the question stem. I learned I needed to run my eyes over the sentences very quickly as I got each new problem, and to notice in the answer choices which parts would eliminate any of those as possibilities. besides learning the bulk of knowledge provided, and how to take the test, I recognized that applying the scenarios in the exam. Questions were easier to process and make decisions about when I applied the theoretical approaches to my experiences with clients. This was invaluable. I believe taking the practice tests along with that, is definitely what caused me to pass. I felt I was on time with each question. I did not feel like I was running out of time, I felt very focused because I learned that you have to stay extremely focused and remember each detail of the question stem while reading it very quickly so that I wouldn't have to go back and analyze everything over again too often, and also, when reading the answer choices to be certain that you will know which one is the most correct. I believe it's also very important to feel confident that you will pass the test when going in and while you're taking the test. That is how I passed the exam. Confidence is of upmost importance. I had a support group that believed in me, and I took two days off to just study a few days before the test, and when I went in, I believed I was going to pass. However, I did not take a break, which I think helped because I needed to be able to not go into a state of anxiety , which would cause me as I learned in the practice exams, to begin to choose incorrect answers in a frenzy of anticipation that I was not going to be able to get things done in time. In the end, I had 15 minutes left over, and I did not go back to reassess my answers. I think this was also important to not second-guessed myself. Thank you for this wonderful program!

From the beginning, I followed the advice of having a growth mindset and taking good care of myself. As a mom, I know the importance of balance, good time management, and a healthy lifestyle. I started swimming daily, followed by online study sessions with Amanda. Yesterday before my exam I rested. In fact, that was easy, as I actually have been fighting a virus, and felt a bit groggy. But I persevered.

I can't say anything but TDC rocks! I initially used TDC for my California Law and Ethics exam and passed without issues. It was a friend who recommended I try a different company for my CA MFT Clinical because it was cheaper and the namesake of the company deals with the BBS and swore by his study prep. Well, that was a huge MISTAKE, for I failed the first attempt and I had a deflated ego. Nevertheless, I bought the TDC program and passed the test. I can honestly say that the TDC program is top-notch and prepares you, as well as teaches you how to conquer and pass the beast. Thank you, TDC, you will be the first company I recommend to anyone!

I was strapped for time for this exam. Some delays with the BBS and had a little under 3 weeks to study. The study material is set up so well that by the 3rd Mock exam I was passing easily. Unfortunately I wasn't able to even take the final final Mock Exam and I still passed my test. I also appreciated the more practical study information like live your life and exercise.

I passed the state exam on my first try, but that isn't saying it was easy. The exam itself is really tough, and there is no way I could have passed my first time without it (and some prayers!). That said, I felt no need to do any memorization since the course prepared me with HOW to think, which made all the difference! I walked in without a bunch of information crammed into my head, and that allowed me to just concentrate on processing the stems and choosing the best answer. I would definitely recommend this course to everyone, and already have to the rest of my graduating cohort!

I was nervous to take this exam but the practice tests built my confidence and showed me which topics I was weak on. I really appreciated this study program and am thankful it helped me pass on my first try.

I do love TDC for their break down on how to think, study, and attack the exams without anxiety. TDC did help me understand how i need to think and identify key words that change my perspective on what the questions are asking me.

This is the best course I have ever taken…I learned so much more than I ever imagined and could not have passed without this course. Thank you all at TDC!!! I took all of your voices into the room with me and I followed the strategies to the letter! I am so grateful for this course and I appreciate the constant, hard work all of you continue to put into this course!!!!

TDC is hands down worth the money. I’ve just got to get that out the way. The audio recordings, PDFs, and the practice exams is all you need. Much of what you think the exam is about: memorizing content… that’s not gonna help you pass. TDC knows this and teaches you the actual process to pass using key elements that help you dissect any question. The actual exam appeared identical to the practice exams. Not to mention the breakdown of rationales for each question on those practice exams. Don’t hesitate, get TDC!

Although I have been practicing for almost 10yrs, I actually waited until the very last minute to study and take the MFT Clinical Exam. I went through all the material as best as I could in 1week then took the test. I passed, but I know that my passing was largely a result of this study system. It assisted with prepping me on how to think during the test by preparing me to expect to see multiple answers that may apply and potentially be correct when approaching vignettes. Simply put, it helped to refocus my mind to say to myself "what would I do next if I was right there in the room with this client". Honestly, that was the best advise ever!!!

The study materials were excellent. The mock exams are not for the faint of heart. Be careful that the "boot camp" nature of the Mock exams doesn't discourage you. Wait to take them until you have adequately studied. Don't rush to take the mock exams. Honestly, if you do diligence to take your time and study, this material will do the trick. Listen to the teachings at normal speed and don't speed them up. Take your time and let Amanda get you a "W" for your first try. Thanks!

I loved how TDC organized their material. I appreciated the mock exam rationales that really helped me at the real exam. Thank you for this great program. I will definitely use TDC for studying for my license exam.

I am not an excellent test taker and this program really prepared me and eased my anxiety about the test. It broke down exactly what to expect. A lot of the questions that were on the exam, where very similar to the practice tests, which helped me navigate how to answer each question. I would definitely recommend this program to a friend.

The TDC program was structured, the printable study guides organized and followed the audio lecture series. My favorite thing was listening to the lectures as I was driving to and from work! The mock exams were harder than the actual test! I am so glad I chose this study method!

Amazing program that thoroughly prepared me for the exam! I will definitely be using this program for the clinical exam too!!

I would highly recommend the TDC study program for the LMFT Law and Ethics Exam. I did my very best to follow the study guidelines and test day preparations. I did my regular exercises, did a final review, and even ate an apple right before I entered the facility. I was able to manage my test anxiety and relax more largely because I had test preparation confidence. I thank you Ms. Amanda Rowen and team for the great work you all did in helping us test takers be successful as much as possible. I even listened to the voice of Amanda as I was eliminating wrong answers and focusing on the reasons why I chose the right responses. Blessings to you all! :)

I am so grateful for TDC! I would have been completely lost with this study resource! Thank you so much for all you do!!
