Outside of California, MFT licensing is overseen by the Association of Marriage and Family Therapist Regulatory Board (AMFTRB), but the state of CA has its own governing board, the Bureau of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). After graduating from a masters degree program, one must register with the BBS as an Associate MFT and then take and pass the MFT Law & Ethics Exam. Once the L&E examination is passed, each candidate must accrue supervised work experience. California requires 3,000 hours over a minimum of 104 weeks in order to qualify for MFT Clinical licensure. When the hours have been completed, it’s time to take and pass the MFT Clinical Test with the BBS. And that’s it! By completing these steps, you can become an LMFT in the state of California. However, if you do decide to pursue this license, we highly recommend connecting with the Bureau of Behavioral Sciences directly as there may be additional details and steps you will need to know during this process. Here is the link to their website:

While the intent of both exams are designed to produce the same results, and that is to ensure public safety within the practice of therapy, there are some nuanced differences between the two MFT Clinical exams themselves.

  • Test Items: The CA MFT Clinical exam consisted of 170 test questions, with 20 of them no being counted towards scoring. Those unscored 20 are put on the exam as experimental questions to be considered as part of the scored items in future exams. On the National AMFTRB Clinical Exam there are 200 test questions, all of which are scored.
  • Content: The difference is slight, but the CA MFT Clinical focuses on testing your knowledge around treatment planning, clinical evaluation, treatment, crisis management, law and ethics, and treatment. The National AMFTRB Exam content focuses more on practice of systemic therapy (assessing, hypothesizing, and diagnosing), designing and conducting treatment (including the evaluation of the process and termination), managing crisis, and maintaining ethical, legal and professional standards.
  • Testing Windows: In California, the BBS offers the MFT Clinical Exam on an ongoing basis of five (5) times per week, while the the National MFT Exam is only offered one week per month, and you must sign up the first of the month during the month prior to you intended exam date.

Yes. In fact, questions pertaining to law and ethics make up more than ¼ of the CA MFT Clinical Exam! The BBS recognizes that a significant amount of time is likely to pass between the time applicants pass the law and ethics exam and when they are able to sit for the CA MFT Clinical exam. Therefore, they want to ensure applicants continue to stay up-to-date with relevant laws and ethical guidelines.

The first exam that associates are required to take is the MFT law and ethics exam. The exam’s name gives away the content--it solely tests your knowledge on the legal and ethical issues that guide our profession. The BBS requires you attempt this exam prior to renewing your associate registration. The clinical exam also tests your knowledge of law and ethics, but it also covers topics such as crisis management, treatment, treatment planning, and evaluation. Each of our programs are comprehensive and cover all of the content and strategy you will need to PASS both exams!

Course Reviews

I studied pretty consistently for several weeks and kept getting 50%-ish scores on the first mock exams. When it came time to take the first, one-chance only, 170-question mock, I made a whole-hearted effort by planning and preparing…so I was quite irritated when I got a less-than-expected percentage. My impulsivity kicked in, and I immediately vented by email my frustrations to TDC. The next day, I received and email from Asya, which began with “You’re amazing”…I broke down in tears, her email was just what I needed at the time I needed it! She offered to call me, and we spoke next-day. Her words and reassurance helped prepare me mentally for my exam (which I took the day after our phone conversation). I may not know these coaches personally, but Asya’s email alone told me that TDC as a whole supports us all during this journey to licensure. I told a terminating client once that even when she can’t hear my voice or see my face, I’d always be cheering her on, and that’s exactly how I felt as I studied and prepared for this exam! Thank you, TDC!!!! P.S. That is my handsome husband in the attached photo with me, my biggest cheerleader!!

TDC helped me feel well prepared to pass the exam and helped curb my anxiety throughout the study process.

I’ve tried several different study materials and none of them have helped me the way this one has. This program is absolutely amazing. It made me understand the questions and know what to look for. It’s like a light bulb was turned on and right away I could recognize the right answers. Thank you so much

I took advantage of the individual tutorial/coach session(s) as I had not passed the exam. I needed a little more support and coaching around strategy. I found this really helpful, and it indeed got me over the finish line!

TDC was intense. The mocks were difficult and the final mocks did make me second guess my readiness but I decided to attempt the exam anyway. The questions on TDC are far more complex then on the real exam and therefore get you thinking more completely. I found that after having experienced TDC it better prepared me for the vignette structure, questions, and answers. I knew what I was looking for and was able to eliminate answers quickly. I finished my exam with 37 minutes to spare and felt that meant I had failed. But what I have come to conclude is that the vignettes were much shorter and the answers were also less complex than TDC, making it so much quicker to get through. It was exactly what I needed. Thank you.

I highly recommend this program!!! I was able to go in with confidence and felt extremely well prepared. I would not have passed without this course. The mock exams were amazing!

I am utterly grateful to TDC for helping me believe in myself. I was super nervous, and I lacked thinking that I was ever going to pass; all of the feedback I had from those who had tried more than once and failed had me terrified. But I now know that no matter how long it takes, if one believes, it will come true. Thank you, TDC, for helping me well with this task. Forever grateful.

I appreciate the coach Maria and Asya very much. They have been very helpful for me. After the tutoring session with Asya, I felt that my understanding about the concept of this exam has reached into next level. Maria’s warm and helpful suggestions also helped me in gaining my confidence about this exam. Thank you for all the support.

Yes, I highly recommend helped me a lot to prepare to my exam.

I learned a great deal using your program. Thank you for the opportunity to study at my pace.

I passed on my first try. They weren't lying when they said it feels like you're failing during the test. I honestly was mentally preparing to re-take it towards the end of the exam, but I passed! If you buy this program, study it well! Study it a lot, and go through it a few times during a time span of about 1.5 to 3 months. Trying to push through it, say in a 3-4 weeks, then trying to pass is a gamble, not impossible though. I didn't go outside the program such as a studying the DSM or reading outside material. I'm not an A student I always just got by in grad school. My best advice, beyond studying, is to PSUH through the test quickly. Read fast, click on answer, do a brief comparison of the options, and MOVE ON. Then, immediately start reading the next question, get it? Like fast! Seriously practice time management on the mocks and DEFINTELY take all the mocks. All of them, including the excruciating final mocks 1 and 2. They are rough, but its true they condition your mind to endure the test. If you're an un-diagnosed ADHD adult like myself (mind wanders and I have to re-read things over and over, struggle with reading comprehension too), you will need it for practice. Read the entire stem of the test and pay attention to key words. I have so much more to say, but now I will express gratitude towards Amanda and the TDC team. This program was worth every penny. Special thanks to Asya. She replied to an email I wrote a week before the exam and put things into perspective for me and gave me some general tips which helped a lot. Thank you so much TDC.

I passed my LMFT exam on the first try thanks to TDC. I brought Amanda into the test with me. The pre-test pep talk helped immensely. I loved the audios, the quizzes, really just everything about TDC. I am a better therapist as a result of taking this course.

I am so grateful that my colleagues suggested TDC. I felt well prepared and after listening to the rationales I remembered the similar questions when testing. I am so excited to have taken this journey with TDC. I will also be using to study for the clinical MFT exam.

I appreciated the audio and how TDC walks you through the organization process and how to think. I believe due to these methods I was successful on my exam. I chose not to take the final 2 mocks due to feedback that they were very difficult. I took the first 3 exams and scored 65% on each one. I appreciate that these exams were a little more difficult than the actual exam.

TDC is an amazing study system. Prior to taking the law & ethics and clinical exams, I always described myself as a "bad" or "anxious" test taker. TDC made me feel confident to pass both exams with flying colors. Amanda's suggestions are great, and the strategies are spot on. I'd recommend TDC to anyone studying for these exams. Well worth the money!!

I previously submitted a response and it said it went through. Please let me know if it did not:

I am a very nervous test taker. I know the material and study thoroughly, however, I get anxious no matter what I do. I loved the combination of audio recordings, practice exams, and worksheets that allowed me to study thoroughly through different methods. The program fully prepared me for the exam and I passed it on the first try! I do not know how anyone would ever pass this exam without TDC's training program. If you are on the fence about purchasing the program, it is worth its weight in gold. Very reasonably priced and was the reason I passed. I am so excited to be licensed and I know TDC had a huge part in this. Lastly, outside of the exam, the training was great to just refresh some things and learn new information as a clinician. Thank you TDC!

I passed my exam today! I can't believe it. I can but I can't! I took the exam for the first time in July and I used Diane Geharts program and when I took the exam in July, I literally cried at the computer because I knew I wasn't going to pass. I felt so unprepared and like I had knew nothing on that exam. Using that program, looking back, I just didn't learn what I needed for this exam- how to rule out, and how to know what the test is testing to see if I know, making sure the answer relates back to the vignette- just so much that Amanda taught me. The test was bizarrely hard the first time. But today, after using your program, the test was easy, like insanely easy and I'm still trying to figure out how?! The final mock 1 exam was so much, way, harder than this. I couldn't believe it. I'm so grateful to God for this program. I took Amanda with me and I heard her strategizing through each question. If it was too hard, I did what she said and went to the next question so not to waste too much time. I finished the exam with 50 minutes left on the clock. The final mock exams 1 & 2, I was actually going over time, so how I finished with an hour left over, all God and this study program! I can finally breathe! Thank you guys so much!

I passed with the help of TDC. The material was reviewed in a way that made it simple to follow as well as logical. The part that helped the most was the discussions about why answers are correct.

Thank you, TDC, for preparing me to pass the exam on my first attempt! I appreciated the practical and effective test-taking strategies you taught in the course, in addition to the overall content of the exam. I think that the HOWs of strategically lean in and tackling the exam questions, not just WHAT to study for, helped improve the likelihood I passed the first round. I’m celebrating this weekend!
