In fact, you'll save $50 with the combo package! Scroll down to read what others have said who’ve used our CA Law and Ethics and CA MFT Clinical Exam prep programs.

Outside of California, MFT licensing is overseen by the Association of Marriage and Family Therapist Regulatory Board (AMFTRB), but the state of CA has its own governing board, the Bureau of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). After graduating from a masters degree program, one must register with the BBS as an Associate MFT and then take and pass the MFT Law & Ethics Exam. Once the L&E examination is passed, each candidate must accrue supervised work experience. California requires 3,000 hours over a minimum of 104 weeks in order to qualify for MFT Clinical licensure. When the hours have been completed, it’s time to take and pass the MFT Clinical Test with the BBS. And that’s it! By completing these steps, you can become an LMFT in the state of California. However, if you do decide to pursue this license, we highly recommend connecting with the Bureau of Behavioral Sciences directly as there may be additional details and steps you will need to know during this process. Here is the link to their website:

While the intent of both exams are designed to produce the same results, and that is to ensure public safety within the practice of therapy, there are some nuanced differences between the two MFT Clinical exams themselves.

  • Test Items: The CA MFT Clinical exam consisted of 170 test questions, with 20 of them no being counted towards scoring. Those unscored 20 are put on the exam as experimental questions to be considered as part of the scored items in future exams. On the National AMFTRB Clinical Exam there are 200 test questions, all of which are scored.
  • Content: The difference is slight, but the CA MFT Clinical focuses on testing your knowledge around treatment planning, clinical evaluation, treatment, crisis management, law and ethics, and treatment. The National AMFTRB Exam content focuses more on practice of systemic therapy (assessing, hypothesizing, and diagnosing), designing and conducting treatment (including the evaluation of the process and termination), managing crisis, and maintaining ethical, legal and professional standards.
  • Testing Windows: In California, the BBS offers the MFT Clinical Exam on an ongoing basis of five (5) times per week, while the the National MFT Exam is only offered one week per month, and you must sign up the first of the month during the month prior to you intended exam date.

Yes. In fact, questions pertaining to law and ethics make up more than ¼ of the CA MFT Clinical Exam! The BBS recognizes that a significant amount of time is likely to pass between the time applicants pass the law and ethics exam and when they are able to sit for the CA MFT Clinical exam. Therefore, they want to ensure applicants continue to stay up-to-date with relevant laws and ethical guidelines.

The first exam that associates are required to take is the MFT law and ethics exam. The exam’s name gives away the content--it solely tests your knowledge on the legal and ethical issues that guide our profession. The BBS requires you attempt this exam prior to renewing your associate registration. The clinical exam also tests your knowledge of law and ethics, but it also covers topics such as crisis management, treatment, treatment planning, and evaluation. Each of our programs are comprehensive and cover all of the content and strategy you will need to PASS both exams!

Course Reviews

Great program that made me feel truly prepared for the exam.

This program was easy to understand and clear. I was able to practice and feel confident for my exam. Thank you, TDC!

For someone who has been out of school and therapy for six years, this program helped me focus on current laws and ethics. I did not use any other testing materials and was able to pass my first attempt. I appreciated all of the practice/mock exams. They really helped me with my critical thinking skills and prepared me for the actual exam.

I passed the first time using TDC8/9/22! The program was laid out in a format that was helpful for different types of learning styles. The program offers you a smart way to approach the questions while providing you understanding and knowledge of law and ethics and I took this helpful information into the exam and passed.

Look no further than TDC if you are looking for test prep programs. TDC is amazing!!!!

I was worried when I scored barely over the passing score for the last 2 final mock exams but going over the rationales for each of the questions I missed on the last 2 mock exams was a GAME CHANGER. I highly recommend going over question rationales before the exam - it helped me "lean into the test and interrogate it". TDC definitely over prepares you.

My experience with TDC was amazing! I remember hearing Amanda's voice throughout the exam. The mock exams were very similar to the actual exam. Everything Amanda said was on point, trust TDC and follow their guidelines on how to study. My coach, Asya, was great and supportive and provided good suggestions and answered my many many questions! Thank you Amanda and team!

TDC helps with study material as well as becoming familiar with common terms in the mock.

TDC prepared me well for the exam!! Very grateful for this study program!

The Therapist Development Center preparation course for the California MFT Law and Ethics Exam helped me prepare well for that exam and the California PCC Law and Ethics Exam. I was able to pass both on the first try. The program ensured that I was spending time on the right topics and gave me important opportunities to practice so that I was familiar with the exam structure and question types ahead of time. The recorded coach was clear and reassuring; I could hear her voice in my head a few times during the exams! I plan to use this company for the licensing exams as well.

Thank you so much for helping me pass! I worked so hard on this while taking care of both of my two young children on my own. Thank you so much for making this doable for me. I feel so accomplished!

First and foremost, I want to thank the team at TDC. I had invested in two separate programs which helped to some degree but not like TDC. TDC helped in ways that I hadn't encounter in any program before. Not only was the content beyond informative but the study tips really helped to ease my anxiety and trust myself and the process. I went through a few fails and felt so discouraged. I just passed a few minutes ago and I am delighted to say that I will be returning to TDC to study for my LMFT clinical exam. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and to anyone else reading this who may be feeling that discouraged feeling, continue to trust yourself as a human and as a therapist. A test does not define your abilities.

TDC was an amazing tool to work with.! I appreciated the preparation from the beginning which included mindset, empowerment and strategies to tackle the exam. Excellent program that supported me to the day of the exam. Thank you so much for the support your program provided me

TDC was a fantastic tool for studying. I used all the tips shared, and definitely had Amanda in my head when taking the exam. The way the program is designed relieved me of the anxiety on the "how" to study - it is so comprehensive and you really are prepared going into the exam!

Just a Thank You, Thank You, & Thank You!!!

Using this study course definitely added some confidence in passing the exam the first time, and it was a refresher for some things I had not touched on in a while as well. I definitely used a lot of the techniques reviewed and found them helpful during exam time, like writing down the breakdown for times/questions was a good tip.

This was an excellent program and would recommend it for everyone who will be taking their Law and Ethics exam.

I struggled with timing and once I shifted focusing on practicing the mocks then I was able to pass. Thanks TDC for supporting me through this journey to pass.

The course was well laid out and easily to follow. It focused on highlighting the important points so I knew what to focus on. I also liked how it utilized both audio and visual information to help with memorization. This course helped me feel a lot less overwhelmed and anxious about the test!

TDC has been there for me for both examinations and prepared me well enough to pass first try for both. I highly recommend and really appreciate the resource.

I really enjoyed this study program. I had a little less than 2 months to study and although it seemed daunting, the study material was very accurate to what the exam was like.
