"I like how organized, detailed, and repetitive your program is laid out. I have used other online programs and books for the National MFT exam and they gave too much information that overwhelmed me.  Your program definitely covers the topics and your mock exams are great examples of questions on the exam. Thank you." -Jill Fishman

The AMFTRB National MFT Exam is a computer-based standardized exam. The exam includes 180 multiple-choice questions. Test takers are given 4 hours to complete the exam questions. Special accommodations can be requested by individuals who meet the criteria based on the Americans with Disabilities Act. In addition, certain states provide special arrangements for English Language Learners (see below for additional information).

The passing score for the National MFT Exam is established by a panel of expert judges and will change with each exam testing period. The passing score will shift up or down depending on the determined level of difficulty of each exam question; the easier the questions, the higher the passing score, and the more difficult the questions, the lower the passing score. The majority of states will use the passing score that is set by the AMFTRB; however, some jurisdictions set their own passing score. Test takers do not receive their results immediately; scores are sent to appropriate state licensing board and mailed to you within 20 business days of your exam date.

Eligibility to sit for the exam will differ for each state that accepts the AMFTRB National MFT Exam for licensure. You will need to contact your state licensing board for the application and to determine eligibility requirements. Once you are approved by your state licensing board to sit for the AMFTRB National MFT Exam, you will receive an approval letter that will include an approval code and a link to the PTC Online Application System. Once you receive approval, complete the PTC application and submit payment for the examination/testing fee. PTC will email you a Candidate ID and Scheduling Authorization within 6 weeks of your testing period.

The AMFTRB National MFT Exam is administered one week each month. The schedule for upcoming exam periods can be found here.

Accommodations are available for test takers with disabilities covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you would like to request special accommodations, complete the online application (at least 8 weeks prior to exam date) and attach the appropriate documentation (i.e. doctor’s letter).

The following states provide special accommodations for English Language Learners:

Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming

The following states do not provide special accommodations:

Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Missouri, North Carolina, New York, Utah, Washington

(see here for updates)

The answer to this question will vary based on the state you are moving to and requirements established by the state’s MFT licensing board. The first step will be to apply to the state MFT licensing board. Once that state MFT board reviews your application and credentials, they will inform you of any deficits or if you are eligible to sit for the AMFTRB National MFT Exam. You must apply to sit for the National MFT Exam through the state’s MFT licensing board in which you plan to practice. You cannot sit for the exam without taking this step. Here is an overview of requirements by state.

The California Board of Behavioral Sciences is actively pursuing increased reciprocity for MFTs. To date, several states will accept the California MFT Clinical Exam, which means MFTs moving to these states may not have to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam. Check with the state’s licensing board to determine if the California MFT Exam will fulfill the exam requirement.

The National MFT Exam has more questions than the California MFT Clinical Exam (200 versus 170). The content areas have some overlap, but the National MFT Exam covers more domains (aka knowledge areas). The domains that are tested on the National MFT Exam can be found here. The National MFT Exam has a larger share of recall-based questions, whereas the California Clinical MFT Exam is mostly comprised of reasoning-based questions. However, The National MFT exam does include exam questions that will test your critical thinking skills.

There is some overlap between the content that is tested on the National MFT exam and the California Clinical MFT exam. However, there are also significant differences in the content and types of questions that appear on each exam. Each program teaches the content and strategies designed to meet the unique needs of each exam. For this reason, it is not appropriate to use one program for both exams. If you are using TDC to prepare for both exams we would be happy to give you a discount code as a thank you for your loyalty.

Course Reviews

I am so grateful for the TDC study program! It helped me to consolidate my years of learning in my master’s program with my hands on work of directly counseling clients. I feel more prepared as a clinician to serve my clients well in treatment and in handling ethical and legal procedures. I am so thankful to have passed on the first try and I know I owe so much of that success to the structure and content of this study program! Thank you for making it such a enjoyable process and for making me feel encouraged along the way.

This was my first time taking the exam and I am so thrilled I passed! I went through the study system and audios and listened to everything twice. I took two breaks during the exam, and I also brought juice and an energy bar to eat during the exam. (I ate a banana before I took the exam). I am really proud with how I did!! The test was definitely difficult, and I am so thankful for this study system. They helped me prepare for the mental marathon that is the MFT licensure exam. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

This program really works, I didn’t understand the form they make the questions, I tried few times and I even thought that I couldn’t pass the test because the language being Spanish my first language but this program taught me how to answer the questions and what to look for.

TDC prepared me on how to think about taking the exam and how to apply what I know through my on the job experience and study materials to take the test with confidence. I was more efficient having more time left over and more effective during my exam as compared to my mock full exams I took through TDC! I am very grateful for the approach TDC uses with the uudio lectures, quick studies, quizzes and exams. I was very appreciative of the fast responses I received for all of my questions while I was studying for the exam. My test score far exceeded the passing score the first time I took the test. Thank you again!

When I finally decided to take the exam, went through the entire TDC program, and felt completely confident! I had researched most if not all testing prep courses, and TDC's reviews were phenomenal! Then I took the exam and felt demoralized and convinced I failed! TDC even prepared me for that feeling, and it was just that, a fear! I PASSED and TDC thoroughly prepared me! Amazing program and a special shout to my coach Robin!

TDC's test preparation program was a perfect blend of support, encouragement, practical tips, content review, practice questions and feedback and explanations. It helped me tackle the extensive content covered, think more clearly, practice the needed thinking, identify and rank answers, and even improve my time in taking the exam. My coach's replies were helpful and timely and gave me both tips and support. The way this program is structured is almost as if Amanda were with you taking the test! It really helped me on some of the tougher questions. This testing program did more than prepare me for the exam: it also filled in gaps left by my degree program. I followed the TDC test preparation program as closely as I could, and it worked. I balked at purchasing this program at first because it seemed so expensive, especially after just completing an expensive degree. However, it was extremely helpful, and I am very glad I purchased it and followed it carefully. I went into the exam much more confident than I would have otherwise. I really felt that the full mock exams resembled the actual test in breadth of content, style of asking questions, and in difficulty. It helped me so much! The actual exam did not feel easy by any means, and like others I wasn't sure if I'd passed, but I felt pretty good about my responses on the real test, based on all the practice questions I had completed. Sure enough, I not only passed but could have missed another 21 questions and still passed! TDC Test Prep is worth it. I would not hesitate to recommend it.

I absolutely loved the study program from TDC. I recently passed my MFT licensure exam in AZ and believe that I benefitted greatly from this program. It was well organized and I Loved the recorded lectures. I also found the pep talk at the end very useful. The tips on how to maintain health and nutrition while studying and then through the day of the exam made a huge difference for me. I also want to note that I am blind and using a screen reader called JAWS. I found this site to be very accessible for screen readers as well. Thank you for your help!

While I believe this course was pertinent to my passing my MFT licensing exam, I cannot help but be annoyed at the amount of spelling and grammar errors throughout. HIPAA was spelled as HIPPA in one section. That is inexcusable for this type of study guide.

There is no way I would have passed the National MFT exam without TDC. The sections are divided in a way that is very manageable and the audio lessons are so helpful. The tests were great not only to see where I was and what I needed more study time on, but I was able to use them as a night before the exam study guide. I have been recommending the program to everyone who still needs to take the test! The coaches are also super helpful and get back to you right away!

I absolutely love TDC Study Center. It is a comprehensive and well-organized program. I used TDC for the AMFTRB National Exam and I passed on the first try.

I am an auditory and visual learner. What worked best for me was following the recommended study outline. I also took notes as I listened to each recording. The next day I found it helpful to review my notes to reiterate what I heard and to keep the information fresh in my memory.

I also liked having the option to listen to the audios as much as I needed to. Often times, I heard information that I missed when I previously listened. The quizzes and mock exams helped to steer me to study specific areas where I was weak in. The rationales were also helpful because they allowed me to strengthen my understanding and have a lot of Ah moments.

At the end of the program I felt confident about the information I had studied. As I approached my test date, I felt well prepared, although I didn’t know how much I really knew. I felt full of information and I was able to teach the concepts of each theory to my family members. They seem to enjoy hearing about all of the details to help families resolve their conflict. I highly recommend this program and I am grateful for having this resource.

I started studying in April for a test in July. I took my time, only studying 3-4 days/week for no more than 2-3 hours (as recommended). I continuously got 75%-77% on the mock exams and while that was passing, i really wanted to breakthrough to 80% before taking the exam. I was able to do it for the AMFTRB mock exam but not TDC mock exams. I was very nervous after the exam- felt like i studied for a different exam- the wording of questions was different, felt odd....but alas, i got that 82% when i took it and am so grateful for the guidance of the TDC materials, lectures and suggestions/advice. I believe they are preparing you for a harder exam than the one you take, and that's great!

I can not imagine studying for this exam on my own. The wealth of information that was organized and scheduled in a way that made it seem doable was phenomenal. The test taking strategies were fantastic and real, including taking care of your body before the exam.

Since I failed I am glad that TDC will stay with me through this process till I pass.

This program was phenomenal! It set me up for success and I passed with flying colors. Well worth the investment. Thank you!

I graduate last year 2020 in the middle of the pandemic. I wasn't sure how to even begin to study or prepare for the national test. Then, I found the TDC website. This is an excellent prep program for the national MFT exam. You don't need to study any other material. The lectures and Quick Study handouts were awesome! It was well worth the price. Thank you so much for the presenting a step by step study format.

TDC was outstanding at helping me organize study materials and getting me on a consistent study regimen. The program covered all the content necessary to pass the exam, and helped me learn in a way that was efficient and long lasting. Want to pass the MFT exam? Use TDC!

I passed on the first attempt taking the exam. I studied consistently for 6 weeks and I passed with a really good score. On exam day I felt confident, prepared and ready. Run, do not walk, to get this program. It was worth every cent.

If you work the steps then you will pass your test no doubt

TDC is a game changer!!!!! If you are thinking about getting it ... just do it! It made studying so simple and I felt really support. I am truly forever grateful!

TDC was not easy! I was overwhelmed at first by the sheer amount of information to memorize, but slowly, bit by methodical bit, with the program's structured guidance, I got there. The TDC practice exams are, I would say, even harder than the actual exam. By the end of my studies, I was scoring in the low 70s on my final mock exams. On the actual exam, I got an 85. Feeling so incredibly relieved, and so incredibly grateful. Also, studying with TDC just made me a better therapist. There was a lot in there I wished I'd learned in grad school.
