California MFT FAQs

How Do I Become a Licensed CA MFT?

Outside of California, MFT licensing is overseen by the Association of Marriage and Family Therapist Regulatory Board (AMFTRB), but the state of CA has its own governing board, the Bureau of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). After graduating from a masters degree program, one must register with the BBS as an Associate MFT and then take and pass the MFT Law & Ethics Exam. Once the L&E examination is passed, each candidate must accrue supervised work experience. California requires 3,000 hours over a minimum of 104 weeks in order to qualify for MFT Clinical licensure. When the hours have been completed, it’s time to take and pass the MFT Clinical Test with the BBS. And that’s it! By completing these steps, you can become an LMFT in the state of California. However, if you do decide to pursue this license, we highly recommend connecting with the Bureau of Behavioral Sciences directly as there may be additional details and steps you will need to know during this process. Here is the link to their website: www.bbs.ca.gov

Do I need both MFT Exam Prep Programs now?

Since you’ll need to take both the MFT Law & Ethics and the MFT Clinical exams with the BBS to become a clinically licensed MFT, you might as well get both programs up front and save money. In fact, you'll save $50 with the combo package! Scroll down to read what others have said who’ve used our CA Law and Ethics and CA MFT Clinical Exam prep programs.

What is the Difference Between the MFT Law and Ethics exam and the MFT Clinical exam?

The first exam that associates are required to take is the MFT law and ethics exam. The exam’s name gives away the content--it solely tests your knowledge on the legal and ethical issues that guide our profession. The BBS requires you attempt this exam prior to renewing your associate registration. The clinical exam also tests your knowledge of law and ethics, but it also covers topics such as crisis management, treatment, treatment planning, and evaluation. Each of our programs are comprehensive and cover all of the content and strategy you will need to PASS both exams!

Is the topic of Law and Ethics tested during the CA MFT Clinical Exam as well?

Yes. In fact, questions pertaining to law and ethics make up more than ¼ of the CA MFT Clinical Exam! The BBS recognizes that a significant amount of time is likely to pass between the time applicants pass the law and ethics exam and when they are able to sit for the CA MFT Clinical exam. Therefore, they want to ensure applicants continue to stay up-to-date with relevant laws and ethical guidelines.

How does the CA MFT Clinical Exam compare to the National AMFTRB Clinical Exam?

While the intent of both exams are designed to produce the same results, and that is to ensure public safety within the practice of therapy, there are some nuanced differences between the two MFT Clinical exams themselves.

  • Test Items: The CA MFT Clinical exam consisted of 170 test questions, with 20 of them no being counted towards scoring. Those unscored 20 are put on the exam as experimental questions to be considered as part of the scored items in future exams. On the National AMFTRB Clinical Exam there are 200 test questions, all of which are scored.
  • Content: The difference is slight, but the CA MFT Clinical focuses on testing your knowledge around treatment planning, clinical evaluation, treatment, crisis management, law and ethics, and treatment. The National AMFTRB Exam content focuses more on practice of systemic therapy (assessing, hypothesizing, and diagnosing), designing and conducting treatment (including the evaluation of the process and termination), managing crisis, and maintaining ethical, legal and professional standards.
  • Testing Windows: In California, the BBS offers the MFT Clinical Exam on an ongoing basis of five (5) times per week, while the the National MFT Exam is only offered one week per month, and you must sign up the first of the month during the month prior to you intended exam date.

Course Reviews

I took the Law and Ethics exam three previous times, utilizing other sources and test preparations, and did not pass. I found out about this test preparation through others who had used it and passed. This preparation course is powerful, by the time I had followed your instructions I felt I was ready to take the test, and I passed. Your staff is so helpful and Amanda's lectures really assist one in understanding the information as well as learning how to take the test. Do what she says and you will pass!
Thank you again, I'm going to sign up for the Clinical exam test prep too.

I spent two months working through the study plan that TDC created for me. It was well organized, and helped me feel very prepared and confident going into the exam. The mock exams from TDC were very similar to how the BBS worded questions and I was able to get through the questions with the tools that I learned. I would recommend this to anyone taking the LMFT Law and Ethics Exam. I also appreciate the way the program is designed and how it encourages breaks, healthy snacks, and exercise as part of the regimen!

This test has definnitley been a journey. Because of life circumstances I was only taking this test once a year during the summer time. I did not want to go another summer without passing. As I was taking the test I truly felt like I was failing it the whole way through. I had to wait for a while to get my results as the testing centers printer was on the frtiz, so as I waited which seemed like forever- I was thinking "now I have to sit here and wait to be told I failed yet again". My thought process was like "well I'll just come back in November". I should point out that as I was taking the test, I was thinking I'd be back in November. Then she handed me the paper that said CONGRATULATIONS.. I had no emotion and said I can't believe it says this. I studied before as I did this time but what changed is that I did not have any anxiety about the test. I took my break (had a banana and water at question 90), I was mindful my time, and if I didn't know the answer I marked the best one and moved on quickly. This program was a Godsend, it truly packs everything together concretely with the knowledge that it needed to pass. I want to say that some of practice questions looked almost identical so some of the questions on the exam.
Thank You TDC, and Thank You Jesus... I passed- Amen!

Thank you so much for helping to bring focus/order to the study process. I felt prepared and it was such a valuable tool for me.

Third time was the charm!! This time what I did differently was took the mock multiple times and listened to the rationales. I feel that listening to the rationale made all the difference because I was able to fully understand how the test was asking questions.

Practice, practice, practice. Don't be discouraged if you take the mocks and run out of time, take more time when you're practicing to break down a question, you eventually get faster at breaking down questions and you will feel more confident in your answer.

TDC stuck with me until I passed. The Strategies audio and Final Pep Talk delivered me to the finish line and helped me conquer my test anxiety. I listened to those two topics more than once with the final time being 24 hours before my exam. I took Amanda and her team into the room with me. Thanks for joining me and sticking with me until I crossed the PASS finish line.

Really easy to follow and I felt well prepared.

Soooo happy to be done!! I took the BBS exam and passed this morning. I felt like the BBS exam was so much like the TDC mock exams in every way. I felt well prepared and the audio's really helped. I think key was also the test taking tips and the pre-test tips about remaining calm, bringing snacks, etc. I felt very calm throughout the test. THANK YOU!!

TDC has been a huge help! I was able to pass my exam on my first try and TDC was so friendly and helpful when I have needed to ask for an extension twice due to issues with locking in a date. What really helped me more was the audio and the fact that I could take full mocks for studying purposes!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I passed the 2nd go-round thanks in no small part to your program, especially the newly added final mock. That new beast of a final mock covered it all and led me down a road of full engagement in all the areas covered in the questions. It made the actual exam "easy" as I forged on, hearing your voice, and recalling all the information garnered throughout your program. So one more time---thank you thank you thank you, for multiple extensions and psychological support throughout this process of becoming a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist.

I wouldn't have pass without this program, thank you so much

This course went above and beyond to adequately prepare me for the test. I also did a coaching session with Robin the day before I took the test, which was incredibly helpful with helping me to conceptualize the vignette and pick the best answer for what the question was specifically asking, as well as move through the questions faster. Thank you so much for creating such an amazing course!!! I don't think I could have passed without it :)

The material is super easy to follow and the coaches Asya and Robin are very helpful and supportive!

I was given materials with my graduate program but they were bulky and overwhelming. After reading several reviews and hearing about TDC on the MFTguide Facebook page, I decided to purchase the program. So glad I did!! Amanda breaks the information into manageable segments and really points out the important things to look for. A lot of the programs have you memorizing everything possible. That is not what the test is like. Amanda really shows you how to think and what to look for when taking the exam. I also took a separate coaching session with a TDC coach, Asya. She was wonderful and reminded me of the strategies I learned during the program. Highly recommend!!

Amanda and her team are top notch! I felt super prepared and calm on test day. The top 50 topics and how they are reviewed in the prep materials are the key for licensing exam success. Thank you!

I loved this program! It was so easy to follow and the tips were amazing. Amanda is so motivating and makes law and ethics a lot more interesting. I truly "took" her into the exam with me and it helped a lot. I would totally recommend this to a friend! Planning out studying was so helpful.

The thought of "sitting" with a 4 hour exam was daunting. TDC provided a clear and focused process of study; which included emotional, academic and theoretical support!!!
I am totally thrilled and grateful!!!
Thank you for your assistance.

Great program better then the others I have used.

I used TDC to prepare for both my Law and Ethics and clinical exam. They helped me every step of the way, broke down the studying into manageable chunks of time and thoroughly prepared me to pass. I did both exams the first time. Thank you TDC!!!!

TDC was very supportive and wonderful. I was able to talk to Robin to trouble shoot my accommodations that I needed. I believe between trouble shooting and studying I was feeling ready. I passed thank you TDC for being there when I needed someone to figure out rather I should apply for accommodations.
