Outside of California, MFT licensing is overseen by the Association of Marriage and Family Therapist Regulatory Board (AMFTRB), but the state of CA has its own governing board, the Bureau of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). After graduating from a masters degree program, one must register with the BBS as an Associate MFT and then take and pass the MFT Law & Ethics Exam. Once the L&E examination is passed, each candidate must accrue supervised work experience. California requires 3,000 hours over a minimum of 104 weeks in order to qualify for MFT Clinical licensure. When the hours have been completed, it’s time to take and pass the MFT Clinical Test with the BBS. And that’s it! By completing these steps, you can become an LMFT in the state of California. However, if you do decide to pursue this license, we highly recommend connecting with the Bureau of Behavioral Sciences directly as there may be additional details and steps you will need to know during this process. Here is the link to their website:

While the intent of both exams are designed to produce the same results, and that is to ensure public safety within the practice of therapy, there are some nuanced differences between the two MFT Clinical exams themselves.

  • Test Items: The CA MFT Clinical exam consisted of 170 test questions, with 20 of them no being counted towards scoring. Those unscored 20 are put on the exam as experimental questions to be considered as part of the scored items in future exams. On the National AMFTRB Clinical Exam there are 200 test questions, all of which are scored.
  • Content: The difference is slight, but the CA MFT Clinical focuses on testing your knowledge around treatment planning, clinical evaluation, treatment, crisis management, law and ethics, and treatment. The National AMFTRB Exam content focuses more on practice of systemic therapy (assessing, hypothesizing, and diagnosing), designing and conducting treatment (including the evaluation of the process and termination), managing crisis, and maintaining ethical, legal and professional standards.
  • Testing Windows: In California, the BBS offers the MFT Clinical Exam on an ongoing basis of five (5) times per week, while the the National MFT Exam is only offered one week per month, and you must sign up the first of the month during the month prior to you intended exam date.

Yes. In fact, questions pertaining to law and ethics make up more than ¼ of the CA MFT Clinical Exam! The BBS recognizes that a significant amount of time is likely to pass between the time applicants pass the law and ethics exam and when they are able to sit for the CA MFT Clinical exam. Therefore, they want to ensure applicants continue to stay up-to-date with relevant laws and ethical guidelines.

The first exam that associates are required to take is the MFT law and ethics exam. The exam’s name gives away the content--it solely tests your knowledge on the legal and ethical issues that guide our profession. The BBS requires you attempt this exam prior to renewing your associate registration. The clinical exam also tests your knowledge of law and ethics, but it also covers topics such as crisis management, treatment, treatment planning, and evaluation. Each of our programs are comprehensive and cover all of the content and strategy you will need to PASS both exams!

Course Reviews

I passed my first time taking my clinical exam for LMFT. The course explored every topic possible being tested on the exam. TDC prepared me for the exam for sure!

Thank you so much for sticking with me through this process! I attempted this test so many times with so many personal things going on it was a relief knowing I was always able to come back and continue to study through the TDC website! Finally I can say I am a licensed MFT!!!!

In studying for the Law and Ethics and Clinical exams I followed TDC's study guides and methods to the t.
Both were excellent. Have highly recommended to friends.

I am so happy that I used this program. I experienced high test anxiety prior to this test. Meeting with a TDC coach was really helpful for me to gain clarity related to how I was thinking and what thoughts and feelings I was letting get in the way of my success. I highly recommend this program, if anything it will help you grow as a clinician in the therapy room with clients!

I am totally impressed with this program. It is well put together. If I missed questions, I am sure it would only be just a couple. I have already called my friends to recommend this program to them. It really made a believer of me. I wish I had known about your program before my previous attempts. This Program is flawless. I really don't see how anyone can use this program and still do not pass the exam at first attempt. The customer support was incredible. I requested extensions, and they happily and readily provided them without questions. All I can say to you guys is, thank you!!!

The program was very good and extremely helpful. Having a structure and guidelines for studying helped me know where to focus and kept me motivated. I can't imagine tackling the process of studying for the Law & Ethics exam without this program and the structure and information it provided. When I took the actual test - I felt prepared and it was actually easier for me than the last two Mock exams! Oh and I passed the first time! Thanks TDC!!

TDC has a great schedule for studying. I felt organized with the studying materials, which helped me feel ready for the test. I think the biggest benefit of TDC is that the mock tests are designed to be more challenging than the actual test. So, on test day I felt confident and felt little struggle with the actual vignettes. I would recommend to others who are studying for their license.

Thank you! TDC over prepared me for the exam and I passed! I am very grateful to Asya and the whole TDC program. Thank you!

My testimony is God led me to my friend who recommended your program. Your program helped me to pass. God gave me the strength. I'm 73 years old and had a 9 year lapse in re registering for what was then called and intern number. I was working as a substitute teacher before and after that until last September.
I am too grateful to express how happy I am that I took your course. Thank You. Thank You. Thank you again.

I signed up with a tutor last minute because I was feeling unprepared. Her tips and help were invaluable to me. The program plus the tutor gave me the confidence, strategy, skills, information, and anxiety management to pass the test my first time!!! Yay, so glad that's over:)

I would recommend TDC to all my colleagues. It over-prepares you for the exam. Do not get discouraged by your scored on mock exams. If you passed or nearly passed, you are ready. The real exam felt easier than the mock exams. So glad I felt over-prepared than under-prepared. Take advantage of contacting a coach. Take a break.

What TDC offers feels like a crash course on everything I learned in grad school and I finished with knowledge that will help me be a better clinician. I failed the exam the first time after 2 cancellations by Pearson due to Covid-19 and my heightened level of anxiety around safety and "fogged up" glasses while wearing a mask. Both Robin and Asya on the coaching team was very supportive offering many resources and suggestions via email. I scheduled a coaching session with Asya who was very helpful and reassuring.

I recommend TDC as THE STUDY COURSE to use for exam prep. I used TDC for my Law & Ethics exam 3 years ago and passed first time. Thank you for making it easy to extend my program and have the comfort level you were with me throughout the process! Well done!

Thank you so much! Really. You have no idea. This exam was 13 years in the making. Thank you so much for getting my ready to pass the exam, so I could fulfill my dream of being an LMFT. Peace and wild blessings, Samuel

Could not have passed without this program!

Thanks you so much for your assistance! The actual exam felt much easier than the mock exams. I think this is a testament to the material and thoroughness of the program! I scheduled a session with Asya who did a wonderful job and talking down my nerves and reflecting that I was prepared for the exam despite never hitting above a 68% on the mock exams. THANKS AGAIN! Official LMFT!

TDC does a great job above and beyond to prepare well for the LMFT Test. They provide excellent resources for future mental health clinical practice. Thank you TDC Team !!

The TDC program for the LMFT Law & Ethics exam helped to keep me on a study schedule, and provided a variety of ways to learn (audio, written, and timed practice exams), which was great. I could see my improvement as I moved through the course, and I passed my exam on the first try!

Thank you guys for giving me so many extensions on the program. I had tons of issues with the BBS and pearson vue when the exam switched over. Then my exam kept getting rescheduled for Covid. I really appreciate how easy it was to get more time with the study materials!

If you're looking for the best program to help you study for your MFT Clinical Exam, I definitely recommend using TDC. I used the TDC and passed my exam on my first attempt. I studied for about 8 weeks and that was enough time to help me prepare. The TDC provided just the right amount of information. The coaches are great. I reached out a few day before my exam and the e-mail I received was very helpful. This program has been a blessing in my journey to reaching this important milestone.

A fantastic system! I truly recommend it. You can follow the program as it is laid out, or make it fit your lifestyle and learning style. I live with learning disabilities and this program was still able to fully emerse me without becoming stressed by the studying process. I passed my test the first time around.
