National LCSW Exam Study Program

Our 2021 Licensed Clinical Social Worker Exam Study System prepares social workers to pass the CLINICAL Level Exam administered by the ASWB. This LCSW Exam Study System is fully updated to reflect the content on the 2021 ASWB exam. Included in the online study system is access to:

  • An organized, step-by-step study plan that allows you to create a personalized, easy to follow schedule.  Many students waste valuable time trying to figure out what to study and often miss out on key topics OR end up over studying topics that are unlikely to show up on the exam.  Our plan keeps you focused and efficient - covering exactly what you need to know for the ASWB's Licensed Clinical Social Worker exam and nothing you don’t.
  • Online audio workshops with downloadable handouts – listen when you want and how much you want.  This means you can study on the go - in the car, on a walk, at the gym, or cleaning your house. The audio and visual study materials work for all types of learners.
  • Effective study tools for the ASWB Clinical Exam — Top 50 Topics Tested, Law & Ethics Quiz, DSM 5 Audio Lectures, and Outline, Quick Studies, and Quizzes for key terms and content that will appear on the LCSW test.
  • Clinical examples that help you learn instead of memorizing. To pass this exam you need to understand how to approach the reasoning-based questions that make up the vast majority of the LCSW exam, including being able to identify what the key clinical concept of each question is. Our study program brings content alive with real-life examples similar to the ones you will see on the LCSW exam.
  • Clear test-taking strategies you will use on exam day to figure out what they are asking and what the best answer is. Our study program for the national LCSW exam also focuses on anxiety management to keep you thinking clearly.
  • ASWB practice exams with over 750+ practice questions that include detailed audio or written rationales, & reflect the actual kinds of questions you will see on the ASWB Clinical Level Exam.  Our questions were written by social workers who passed with scores of 90% or higher on the ASWB Clinical Exam, so the questions accurately reflect what you will see on the test (unlike many other practice tests and programs you will find out there in the test prep world).
  • Experienced coaches are available via email for questions and support who will always get back to you within two business days (but are often able to get back to you even sooner!).

The LCSW licensing exam training takes roughly 57 hours of study time to complete once. We recommend studying between 2 and 12 weeks. Access to the program expires after 4 months, but it is FREE to extend or repeat the program. We are with you until you PASS the Licensed Clinical Social Work Exam! Once you sign up, you can access the program & digital resources immediately. Nothing is shipped - it is all online. Get started now to prepare yourself to PASS the ASWB Clinical Exam with confidence!

Still unsure if our LCSW Exam Prep is right for you?

Here at the Therapist Development Center, we understand that taking the ASWB Clinical Level Exam can be daunting, and choosing the right social work ASWB Clinical exam guide can be confusing. Many of you have jobs that are dependent on you passing this LCSW exam. Others have been out of graduate school for a long time and feel out of touch with the broad amount of content tested on the ASWB Clinical Exam. Finding the right LCSW licensing exam training and LCSW exam prep program can be challenging with so many options - books, workshops, apps, and other online options.

Many social workers come to us after using other LCSW study guides and failing, finding themselves feeling defeated or hopeless that they won't find the help they need. They report that with other social work ASWB Clinical exam guides, they were overwhelmed with a pile of books, that the day-long workshop only covered a small portion of the content tested, or that the online program they went through didn’t teach them how to answer the types of questions that showed up on their exams.  We totally get it. We created a robust study program for the ASWB Clinical Exam that offers multiple learning methods, so your brain can learn both the content you need to pass and the strategy needed to break down the unique types of questions that show up on this exam. The good news is, once the social workers who previously failed started studying with us, they quickly found themselves with a renewed sense of confidence and were able to successfully PASS their ASWB Clinical Level Exams.

How many questions on the ASWB clinical exam?

There are 170 questions on the ASWB exam, with 150 questions used for scoring. The other 20 questions are used for possible additions to future ASWB exams. These are multiple-choice questions.

Course Reviews

Thank you for putting this together! Definitely the best preparation course I could have bought!

I have been using an app on my phone to prepare but this website and program that I found a week and a half prior to my exam date gave me the review of the information I needed to go in to the test confident and pass it the first time. Thank you!

Greatly appreciative of this program. I used algar to learn the concepts and past knowledge I forgot. Then used your common sense and Dsm guide to increase on what I couldn’t understand from books.

When it comes to studying I never know if I’m doing it right. This program takes the guess work out of it and provides you with a system that is structured and manageable. I also could not believe how close some of the mock questions were to the real exam which was comforting as it made me feel confident during the exam. Thanks to this program, and following the structure, I passed on my first attempt!

Don't give up! Study Study and change the way you view the exam and you got it!

Thank you to TDC for your great study program and support along the way. This was a great study program and whenever i had a question and wrote into the tutors, i was quickly responded too and helped.

I started this journey with TDC almost a year July 2017 by the endorsement of many colleagues. I can not express how incredible the attention to detail this program was given to the study material. I studied for about 6 months before taking my exam in February. I felt "good". I felt like i studied as much as I could. I followed the program pretty much to the letter, with constant contact with Heidi and the Facebook family. I WAS READY. Heidi and I kept in touch weeks before my exam, encouraging me and answering all my questions. I WAS READY! I counted 10 emails between myself and Heidi! That woman is a SAINT! LOL!!

I failed.

I missed it by 7 points! I had no idea WHAT HAPPENED and what the heck was on that test! I couldn't understand the verbiage and there were just way too many research questions for me. I panicked. Everything, I knew went out the window that day. it was hard to tell my TDC Family on Facebook I failed. This is a group of individuals that really understood my pain, and embraced me while I cried. The Facebook Group is none-like-any-other! If it weren't for this Group and Heidi I do not think I would have come back.

I was given permission to take a break, when I really just wanted to quit! I did just that, I took a two- three month break... I couldn't even think about looking at the TDC website to study or even visit the Group I had become so close too. Everyone told me to take a break and not beat myself up. A few of us wrote the ASWB and complained about the test we took and were met with a very cold response. So I invested in one more thing the ASWB Handbook, it explained the process of how the questions were written and insight on how to read questions thoughtfully. Not as good as TDC, but still good to see it some where else.

I told Heidi wanted to take the private tutoring to get some insight and feedback. I COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE PLEASED! Not only did I have her attention I was assured my thought processes were on point. However, after taking one more Mock exam and getting a 76% Heidi suggested I postponed my test a bit as she wanted me in my 80's before testing again. So I postponed my exam by 3 weeks and studied and took the last Mock exam and got a 77% not the best, but I was ready.

This time I was confident. Heidi and my supervisor at work assured me "YOU GOT THIS". My Facebook family assured me, "YOU GOT THIS". I did everything suggested by TDC and Heidi; I got a good nights sleep, I worked out the morning of and I choose not to study the day before, but treat myself to a big fat steak dinner. I woke up READY. I was confident.

I Passed. I needed 103 to pass and I got 118! I KILLED IT! I couldn't contain myself after the test. I jumped up and down in my private room and screamed in my hands! The woman looked at me concerned, like, "Are you alright?" I just looked at her and gave her the thumbs up! I continued to cry into the parking lot! I called my mom first, then I went to my support system that I have grown to love and posted in the Facebook Group, "I PASSSSSED!" with a picture of me with tears and my pass report.

You know what I will NEVER forget?
Heidi's message to me, " YAAASSSSS!!! Been eagerly awaiting this post all day, Darick! So very happy for you :D :D :D Take some time to do some serious CELEBRATING (and/or SLEEPING) this weekend."

This experience has been adventure one I am glad I am over with, but would use this program again if I needed too. When they say they are with you til you pass, they mean it! I couldn't have done it without you TDC and TDC Family. Thank you for lifting me when I needed it and encouraging me even when I didn't want it!

Always in Gratitude,
Darick Hendrix, LCSW

Absolutely fantastic program! Easily to follow. Well structured. Felt very prepared going into test day as long as you follow the program accurately. Questions are answered quickly via email for extra support. Can't thank TDC enough for your support! Excited for this next journey to come as an LCSW
Thank you TDC :-)

Great test taking strategies and broke down the information in a way that was not intimidating and easy to make a study plan.

I am absolutely grateful. All the material is not used on the exam however it is nice to have an abundance of information to pull from when a question is asked on the exam. I am overwhelmed with emotions and thankful for the process. This was my fifth time taking the exam and first time using TDC. I wish I would have known about it sooner. I would have used it and saved hundreds of dollars. Thank you! Happy Studying!

I am so grateful for TDC. I had failed the LCSW exam in May and was very afraid to take it again. While waiting for the 90 days between tests I read posts and compared study programs. The one I had used first was not entirely updated to the DSM-5 and not as in depth as TDC. After reading all the posts from people passing the test well above the required passing score, I looked into the program a little more. I loved the fact that the study material was prepared in a way that you learned by reading, writing, and auditory. I felt like I went into the exam a lot more prepared and pass or fail I understood the DSM-5 personality disorders better than before. Thank you again TDC!!

Thank God that I was able to return to him and focus on all areas f my life. I am back in church, eating right, exercising everyday with Yoga and walking. the TDC study plan was great.

Therapist Development Center prepares you by compiling a wealth of information into an organized, easy accessible study system. It allows you to focus and apply your knowledge through different learning styles. I utlized this program for both my LMSW and LCSW licensure exams and passed first try on each without using any other study system or practice tests. I felt confident throughout my exam and would highly recommend this program! They stay with you from start to finish and beyond! Thank you TDC!

I previously used TDC to take (and pass) the CA Law & Ethics exam, so there was no question that I would use TDC when I began studying for the Clinical exam. I decided to follow the program on the recommended 5 week timeline, and I really liked the structure of the audios followed by quizzes and practice exams. By the time I took the final full mock exams, I scored 88% and 85% and felt well prepared to sit for the actual exam. I reviewed the Quick Study Guides on the morning of the exam so that I would have the knowledge fresh in my mind, but the most important thing I reviewed were Amanda's study tips - to reason through the questions by eliminating obvious "no's," put things in logical order, work through challenging questions by using clues in the stem and knowledge of other topics, and pretend that I was in the room with the client in the scenario. I worked through the exam quickly and reviewed my marked questions, only changing answers if I had an "aha" moment on Amanda's recommendation. My testing center did not allow me to leave any snacks or juice on top of my locker, but I was allowed to bring in two unwrapped cough drops and that helped with making me feel rejuvenated. I finished in about 2 1/2 hours and was compelled to review the whole exam, but I decided to trust my first answers and just submit! My exam required 103 correct answers to pass and I answered 126 correctly. Thanks to TDC I felt prepared and confident walking into the exam, and am so proud to be an LCSW now!

I used several study resources, however TDC was my primary resource. I completed the course, redid practice exams, reviewed rationals, and listened to all of the audio recordings several times. I gained a lot of information from the course which I was able to apply during my test day. I leaned in like Amanda said and kept a positive mindset throughout the test, although I thought I wasn't doing well at times. This exam is not a memorization test by any means. You have to grasp the concepts and understand how you can/ will apply them in various situations. This exam was challenging, however you can do it! TDC is a great program and I know that it was influential toward my success. Thank you so much!!

I had previously taken the test using other study materials and failed the test by 2-4 points. After using the TDC study materials I passed the LCSW test on my 5th try. I scored a 109 and only needed 99 points to pass. This course has helped me to be successful and I am happy to be done with the testing process.

Thank you,
Janna Broxson, MSW

I have bad test anxiety and was terrified of tihs exam. I heard so many horror stories of people not passing and taking it multiple times. I'm currently in school for my Ph.D. in Social Work and there is no way I could go to school, work, be a mom and study for this exam. I knew I had to take and pass the exam during my summer break. TDC thoroughly prepared me, even those times during the exam I questioned how well I was doing I remember Amanda, Bethany and Heidi in my head as well as everything I learned from the program. I 'm so very excited and happy to say that I PASSED the test on my first time!!!!! Thank you so very much TDC. I would recommend this program to anyone!

Through studying the course material, I not only preparing for the ASWB exam, but I was able to strengthen my knowledge and skills that were applicable to my day to day duties as a social worker.

Though I've always been a good test taker and don't suffer from test anxiety, the idea of studying for the LCSW exam at 55 years old (just got my degree 2 years ago and have my BS is Forestry; long story) was overwhelming. I'd look at the list of KSA's and think "how on earth can I study all of those enough to remember them on exam day." On the Facebook page, LMSW/ LCSW Exam Study Group, quite a few people highly recommended TDC, and checking out the website convinced me that their teaching methods would be perfect for my old brain. The combination of audio, written information, lots of quizzes/tests was perfect and I always got prompt responses to my questions. The coaches also provide a lot of spot on tips to increase confidence and reduce worry.

Thank you so much for your study guide. I am so grateful for your help.
