National LCSW Exam Study Program

Our 2021 Licensed Clinical Social Worker Exam Study System prepares social workers to pass the CLINICAL Level Exam administered by the ASWB. This LCSW Exam Study System is fully updated to reflect the content on the 2021 ASWB exam. Included in the online study system is access to:

  • An organized, step-by-step study plan that allows you to create a personalized, easy to follow schedule.  Many students waste valuable time trying to figure out what to study and often miss out on key topics OR end up over studying topics that are unlikely to show up on the exam.  Our plan keeps you focused and efficient - covering exactly what you need to know for the ASWB's Licensed Clinical Social Worker exam and nothing you don’t.
  • Online audio workshops with downloadable handouts – listen when you want and how much you want.  This means you can study on the go - in the car, on a walk, at the gym, or cleaning your house. The audio and visual study materials work for all types of learners.
  • Effective study tools for the ASWB Clinical Exam — Top 50 Topics Tested, Law & Ethics Quiz, DSM 5 Audio Lectures, and Outline, Quick Studies, and Quizzes for key terms and content that will appear on the LCSW test.
  • Clinical examples that help you learn instead of memorizing. To pass this exam you need to understand how to approach the reasoning-based questions that make up the vast majority of the LCSW exam, including being able to identify what the key clinical concept of each question is. Our study program brings content alive with real-life examples similar to the ones you will see on the LCSW exam.
  • Clear test-taking strategies you will use on exam day to figure out what they are asking and what the best answer is. Our study program for the national LCSW exam also focuses on anxiety management to keep you thinking clearly.
  • ASWB practice exams with over 750+ practice questions that include detailed audio or written rationales, & reflect the actual kinds of questions you will see on the ASWB Clinical Level Exam.  Our questions were written by social workers who passed with scores of 90% or higher on the ASWB Clinical Exam, so the questions accurately reflect what you will see on the test (unlike many other practice tests and programs you will find out there in the test prep world).
  • Experienced coaches are available via email for questions and support who will always get back to you within two business days (but are often able to get back to you even sooner!).

The LCSW licensing exam training takes roughly 57 hours of study time to complete once. We recommend studying between 2 and 12 weeks. Access to the program expires after 4 months, but it is FREE to extend or repeat the program. We are with you until you PASS the Licensed Clinical Social Work Exam! Once you sign up, you can access the program & digital resources immediately. Nothing is shipped - it is all online. Get started now to prepare yourself to PASS the ASWB Clinical Exam with confidence!

Still unsure if our LCSW Exam Prep is right for you?

Here at the Therapist Development Center, we understand that taking the ASWB Clinical Level Exam can be daunting, and choosing the right social work ASWB Clinical exam guide can be confusing. Many of you have jobs that are dependent on you passing this LCSW exam. Others have been out of graduate school for a long time and feel out of touch with the broad amount of content tested on the ASWB Clinical Exam. Finding the right LCSW licensing exam training and LCSW exam prep program can be challenging with so many options - books, workshops, apps, and other online options.

Many social workers come to us after using other LCSW study guides and failing, finding themselves feeling defeated or hopeless that they won't find the help they need. They report that with other social work ASWB Clinical exam guides, they were overwhelmed with a pile of books, that the day-long workshop only covered a small portion of the content tested, or that the online program they went through didn’t teach them how to answer the types of questions that showed up on their exams.  We totally get it. We created a robust study program for the ASWB Clinical Exam that offers multiple learning methods, so your brain can learn both the content you need to pass and the strategy needed to break down the unique types of questions that show up on this exam. The good news is, once the social workers who previously failed started studying with us, they quickly found themselves with a renewed sense of confidence and were able to successfully PASS their ASWB Clinical Level Exams.

How many questions on the ASWB clinical exam?

There are 170 questions on the ASWB exam, with 150 questions used for scoring. The other 20 questions are used for possible additions to future ASWB exams. These are multiple-choice questions.

Course Reviews

I have talken this test 5 times using other programs but TDC made it much easier for me to study and learn the information to go and slay that beast !

This program provided me with a great structure to prepare for the ASWB at a time in my life when I was very busy and extremely nervous about being ill prepared for the exam. I had been out of graduate school for several years and was feeling overwhelmed by the idea of digging into the content and frankly not knowing where to begin. I really appreciated both the content and design of this program because I am the type of learner that likes there to be a combination of learning formats to keep me engaged. The quizzes and tests were really key for me as well! Thank you for putting your energies into creating a thoughtful preparation program. I am quite sure I would not have passed if it was not for my preparing with this program!

I am a mother of four and during my last pregnancy it was nearly impossible to study. I had planned to take the exam before my fourth daughter was born, but I just didn't have the energy or time. To make a long story short I wrote in three times to TDC to get my access extended. I listened to the lectures dozens of times and reviewed the material at my own pace (which was super slow). I had so many questions which the coaches answered right away (sometimes within hours of my messaging them) I took the exam and past it on my first try. All throughout the exam I felt confident I would pass. I'm so grateful for TDC and their team. THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

Passed the first time taking the exam. I bought a book previously but wasn't motivated to use it and just felt it was a textbook not a study material. During the exam, I heard one of the lecturers voice from 'The Development Center'. I would recommend this to everyone.

Thank you TDC for the thorough review materials that prepared me for my LCSW exam. I had so much hesitation taking the test having been out of school for many years, but all I can hear is Heidi's voice answering the questions. Thank you !

I passed on my first try. I needed 107 to pass and I received a score of 119. I scored a 81% and an *2% on the full mock exams. I new as soon as I sat down to the test that I was prepared. Thank you TDC for this thorough and effective training program.

I took the ASWB exam and passed first time, scoring somewhere in the 84-87% range depending if they calculate the throw away 20 questions. I have diabetes, am in my 50's, and have "focusing" issues. Here's what I learned and applied from this course:
I scored 49% on the first test coming in I progressively got better throughout the course. My Mock exams were in the high 80% and the 2 full mocks came in at 74% and 76% respectively. I took the final full mocks in 2 hours 10 minutes and felt like I was going slow.
Here's some pointers: .
1. go through the course more than once.
2. Take both full mocks.
3. Ask questions.
4. Learn from your mistakes.
5. Create a "rule sheet" if you can and study it. Eg : you FIRST refer to a physician if there are physical issues (not do a biopsychsocial).
6. REALLY LISTEN to the pep talk and strategies. The strategies work.
7. Get accommodations EARLY- I did not and had to whip through the exam so my blood sugar was OK, I brought in glucose tabs though. AND my test center (Pearson Vue) would NOT let anyone inside with coffee or anything to drink in the waiting room FYI. Get there early enough since there may be a lot of people.
8. Be friendly to the workers at the center, They are there to help you and it alleviates the tension.
9. Before the test time started: I divided my writing board into 7 sections of 10 each, and 1 section of 5, equaling 85. I underlined each section. After Q85 I wrote in big letters "TAKE A BREAK." I continued to section off the next half the same way. In each of the sections I wrote down numbers to the questions that I thought I MIGHT have incorrect and totaled them throughout. This made it far more doable. Instead of thinking of 170 questions, I thought, "OK, I just have 10 questions, then I'll stretch, or breathe deeply for a sec before going on. ) I did this 7 more times, took a break and then again for questions 86-170, and then finished in 2 hours. I calculated that by the most possible incorrect questions, I would have 26, which is totally passing. And that was close to what I got wrong. By the way, I was NOT allowed any food on my break, and I advocated loudly but it still didn't work. Just something to note.

This is an excellent course and I would highly recommend it. I have tiny critiques on it that I would personally like improved, but it's more my opinion than the content and structure of which it is formulated. Worth every penny!

The foundation that TDC provides is solid and helped greatly during the exam. I heard Amanda’s voice at times reminding where is this client, starts where client is at & also reminding me to read every word in question stem and answers. This strategy kept me focused and present.
To God be the Glory, Honor and Praise!!

I have severe test taking anxiety, and I swear by this study system!

I prepared and did things differently 1 week before taking the exam this time. I rested, exercise little bit, ate better, listened to Mozarat on my way to the center, and even got a massage the day before the exam. I purchased a protein bar and water. I am not allowed to bring snacks or water in so I tied the grocery bag under the bathroom sink. There is no time or numbers of the questions so I didn't know what number question I was and when was the right time to take a break. Once I got in and before opened the computer, I wrote numbers up to 170 on the white board they gave me and when I answered 100 questions then I took a break. Used the bathroom, ate protein bar and drank water. I saw a clock on my way in and time was 4:34pm. I realized, I had 1 hr and 40 mins left. I completed the exam around 25 mins before. Reviewed around 50 questions and changed 2 only. Please allowed me an extension. Thank you in advance

I passed the clinical exam on my first try! I can't thank TDC enough. I followed the program to a T. I listened to all the audios several times, took the quizzes several times, read the quick studies exactly as instructed, and followed the self-care recommendations. I also used the test taking strategies during the exam and they were lifesavers. I truly believe that this study program helped me to develop as a therapist. Thanks again to Amanda and the TDC community!

TDC provided an engaging, well-structured, and comprehensive program which enabled me to pass the LCSW exam on my first attempt! Thank you so much for helping me to achieve this momentous goal!

I felt this was very helpful in understanding how the questions were worded in the exam. This was very helpful, I am not good at taking exams. This helped me feel more confident with this. The exam is a lot of uncertainty, this helped me feel comfortable with that as well as helped me with facts that I don't use everyday or things that were not covered in my graduate program.

I scored 94 correct answers the thei first time I took the exam and scored 104 correct answers this time using the TDC program

Today I passed the LCSW test! I am so happy and owe it to TDC! I took the LCSW test one time before, studied using other books/study materials, and failed. I was so devestated but not ready to settle. I immediately started looking for a study program and found TDC. I went through the program completely at least two times and constantly was using the audio to listen to the study material. I was also able to check in with my coach when I had a question anytime and she was very prompt to get back to me so I could continue to advance my studying. Through this program I learned a lot and know that this will make me an even better Social Worker! I did the final practice mocks and listened to the final pep talk, increased my score, and passed! Thank you TDC staff and my coach! I couldn’t have done this without your help!

I have gotten closer in this program than any other and those I know passed with this program

The first time I took this exam I failed by one question. I used a study book which covered way too much material and was difficult to study from. I also have a ton of anxiety and TDC definitely helped that. TDC was also very organized and covered the questions that would be tested and nothing extra or unnecessary! I went into the exam nervous, but confident that I was prepared. I almost screamed seeing "PASS" on the screen! Thank you TDC!!!!!

TDC Program on point. The program is structured and makes it easier to stay disciplined and focused on study material.

Although I failed the exam, I plan to continue studying the material for the next 90 days to better prepare for reexamination.

The actual exam was definitely more difficult than the mock exams. The actual exam questions were more difficult to reason through and seemed less logical than the mock exams. And then there was material in the exam that just wasn't covered in the program. That said, I needed 103 correct to pass and I got 128 correct, so it worked out in the end.
